Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, occurs when the gum tissue becomes infected by bacteria in plaque. Early symptoms include red, swollen or bleeding gums. Left untreated, it can advance and cause the gums to separate from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. This advanced gum disease can destroy the bone and tissues that support the teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss. It may also increase risks for health issues like heart disease and diabetes. Treatment options range from nonsurgical deep cleaning to treat early stages, to laser therapy and surgery for advanced gum disease. Regular dental checkups are important for preventing and treating gum disease.
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. There are three types of Dental Implants.
Certain foods are good for your teeth and gums. Truth be told, the foods that are good for your overall health are also good for your teeth. Visiting the dentist is also an important way to prevent cavities.
A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat and save a badly decayed or infected tooth. During the procedure, the dentist removes the nerve and pulp from inside the tooth, cleans the inside thoroughly, and seals the tooth to prevent further infection. Symptoms of needing a root canal include severe tooth pain when biting or extreme sensitivity to hot and cold. The root canal procedure involves numbing the tooth, drilling to access the infected area, cleaning out debris with water and disinfectants, applying medication if needed, and filling the inside with a sealing material to protect and restore the tooth.

This document provides an overview of the periodontal ligament. It begins by defining key terms like periodontium and periodontal ligament. It then describes the development, structure, cells, extracellular components, and functions of the periodontal ligament. Specifically, it notes that the periodontal ligament is composed of collagen fibers and ground substance that connect the cementum and alveolar bone. It houses various cell types, including fibroblasts, osteoblasts, cementoblasts, and progenitor cells. The document discusses how the principal collagen fibers develop and attach to the root surface. It also examines how the periodontal ligament maintains homeostasis between the hard tissues.

Pulpectomy is a dental procedure to remove infected or dead pulp from the root canals of primary teeth. It aims to maintain the tooth in a non-infected state by cleaning and filling the root canals. A partial pulpectomy removes pulp from a single visit, while a complete pulpectomy is done over two visits with emergency treatment followed by root canal filling. Common filling materials for primary teeth include zinc oxide eugenol paste and iodoform paste, which resorb at a rate similar to the tooth root. The procedure involves local anesthesia, access through the crown, pulp removal, canal cleaning and shaping, irrigation, drying and obturation.
The document provides information about orthodontic treatment from Dr. Brian Bergh. It discusses that 40-75% of people can benefit from orthodontic treatment, with evaluation recommended by age 7. It describes different orthodontic appliances including fixed braces, clear braces, lingual braces, and Invisalign. It also addresses topics like orthodontics for adults, how long treatment takes, and that modern braces are more comfortable than in the past.
Root canals are performed to treat infected or decayed teeth by removing the nerve and cleaning out the root canal. Decay or infection can spread from the tooth crown down the root canal if left untreated, causing pain and potentially spreading infection. A root canal removes the source of infection and toxins by cleaning and sealing the inside of the tooth to save the tooth rather than extracting it. While root canals had problems in the past, modern endodontic techniques are highly effective at disinfecting and sealing teeth, with over 90% long term retention rates. Though early 20th century research suggested root canals could cause disease, current standards and understanding of endodontics do not support those conclusions. The options are to save

Root canal treatment involves removing infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of a tooth. The dentist drills into the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. They then clean out the pulp, bacteria, and debris. Finally, the dentist fills and seals the inside of the tooth to prevent future infection. Root canal treatment saves a tooth that would otherwise require extraction due to infection or damage to the pulp.

This longitudinal study observed 480 male Sri Lankan tea plantation workers aged 14 to 46 years over 15 years to understand the natural progression of periodontal disease in the absence of dental care. Participants were grouped into rapid, moderate, and no periodontal attachment loss progressors. By age 35, rapid progressors experienced 9mm of attachment loss compared to 4mm for moderate and less than 1mm for no loss. Nearly all tooth mortality was due to periodontal disease, with rapid progressors becoming edentulous by age 45. The findings demonstrate that periodontal disease severity increases with age and varies between individuals.
If you have a deep infection within one of your teeth, you may need a root canal to remedy the problem. This presentation will explain everything you need to know about root canals.
Tooth preparation involves the mechanical alteration of teeth to receive restorative materials. It is needed when teeth develop cavities, fractures or substance loss from abrasion or erosion. Tooth preparation designs vary based on the extent of damage and type of restorative material used. Cavities are made slightly larger than lesions and incorporate features like retention and resistance forms to ensure longevity of restorations. Common materials used for restoring teeth include dental amalgam, resin composite, and glass ionomer dental cements.

Here is a summary of Pneumothorax:
Pneumothorax, also known as a collapsed lung, is a condition that occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall. This air buildup puts pressure on the lung, preventing it from expanding fully when you breathe. A pneumothorax can cause a complete or partial collapse of the lung.
