Puppies are raised for over a year and a half before intensive two-year training to guide, assist with tasks like shopping and crossing streets, and work as a team with their handler. Golden retrievers and labradors are commonly used breeds. Guide dogs wear harnesses or vests when working and should not be distracted by petting.
