Green walls, also known as living walls or vertical gardens, involve growing vegetation on building walls. There are three main types: wall climbing green walls which use climbing plants that grow upwards; hanging green walls which form a vertical green belt on multi-story buildings; and module systems which require more complex design but are the most expensive option. Green walls provide benefits like lower energy bills by insulating buildings, reducing stress and boosting well-being, and enhancing aesthetic appeal. However, they also require maintenance to care for plants and pipes, and can potentially damage building structure or plumbing if not properly maintained.
Presentation created for the Queens Library in 2022 covers eco-roofs including, whiteroof, blueroofs and brownroofs while introducing important concepts around the environmental impacts of each. Then moves on to greenroofs, which are distinct from rooftop terrace gardens. Covers extensive and intensive greenroofs and the various layers necessary to implement a sound greenroof. Also overs plant selection for extensive greenroofs.
This document discusses roof gardening systems. It describes a green roof system as involving waterproofing, a drainage system, Typar geotextile for root protection and drainage, a lightweight growing medium, and plants. Green roofs can provide benefits like stormwater management, improved air and water quality, and increased energy efficiency. The document presents examples of existing and proposed roof garden projects, and international roof garden projects using green roof systems with drainage layers and Typar geotextile. It also analyzes issues with non-standardized roof gardens that can experience punctures, soil migration, and water seepage without proper waterproofing and drainage layers.

Greenhouses provide a controlled environment for growing crops year-round by protecting them from extreme temperatures, rain, and wind. They come in different structures like freestanding, attached to other buildings, or mounted in windows. Components include the structural frame, covering materials like polyethylene or polycarbonate, and environmental controls. Greenhouses allow precise regulation of temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, irrigation, and fertilization to maximize plant growth and yields. While the initial costs are high, greenhouses can extend growing seasons and increase crop production.
Precision farming involves managing spatial and temporal variability across all aspects of agricultural production using technologies and principles. It distinguishes from traditional farming by customizing management for small field areas rather than treating the whole field uniformly. GREEN ROOFS AND TERRACE GARDENS - explains sections , methods , materials , issues and considerations for greening the roofs and sustainable development
A green wall is a wall partially or completely covered with greenery that includes a growing medium like soil or substrate to support plant life. Green walls incorporate vegetation, growing medium, irrigation, and drainage into a single system attached to internal or external walls. They differ from green facades which rely on fewer climbing plants. Green walls have existed for centuries, with ancient examples like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, but have increased in popularity with developments in green wall systems over the past few decades. Green walls require selecting appropriate plants, growing medium, and maintenance methods, but can provide benefits like improving air quality, reducing heat absorption, and increasing biodiversity in urban environments.

GREEN WALLS
Living Green Walls have been around for
centuries, but the modern version has been built
to be attached to both interior and exterior walls
and has been around only for about 25 years.
BENEFITS OF Green Walls are being extensively studied today
and include cleaning interior air space; deadening sound; reducing
airborne dust; reducing carbon dioxide levels; and, removing VOC’s
and other harmful toxins from the air. Additionally, employee morale
and productivity is positively affected; people are naturally drawn to
“nature”; and, physiological and psychological health is improved.
Green Walls are being used to make a green design statement for
branding purposes, to add value to commercial space, to enhance
our connection with nature, and to create and enjoy art.
Finally, Green Walls do contribute to LEED credits.

PLANTS
Long term plants that are proven to work well vertically for
interior environments. They are able to handle the lower
lighting conditions while still being durable and attractive.
These are used in smaller quantities to add intricacy through
color and texture. They may need to be replaced sooner than
the core plants which is why they are used in smaller amounts
and are covered under warranty.

burn foliage, create

Interior plants need an even flood of 150 fc / 1500
lux of light provided across the entire surface of
the wall for a min. of 10 to 12 hours per day with a
color temp. of 4000 to 4500° K. We recommend
that either Metal Halide or LED's be used.

WATER
Versa Wall®
System distributes
water throughout the wall in
a closed system so no water
escapes forward or behind
the wall. Water is pumped to
the top and flows from tray to
tray to the bottom.
Trays are designed to hold a
measured amount of water for
each individual plant. Plants
do not compete for water.
This means no soil spills
out of the wall and no water
spills forward. This assures
that the Green Wall will be
neat and spotless.
Water can be recycled or
drained off at the bottom.
Water time is managed to
reduce waste.
Typical watering times are
every 7–10 days depending
on wall size.

MAINTENANCE
Depending on the type of lift or ladder to use to access the
wall, there must be an access point from which you can set up
the lift and access the entire wall. A pathway ‘traffic plan’ must
be established to transport the lift to and from the wall. Lastly, a
storage location for the lift needs to be considered if it's being
kept on site as opposed to being rented.

RELIABILITY
The Versa Wall®
System was first introduced in 2011. As of early 2015
there have been over 300 Versa Walls installed. After four years, not
one of the walls has failed and not one has been replaced. Client
satisfaction has resulted in repeat business: one client has 25 of the
walls, another has 15 and still another has 5. All plan on additional walls.

Q+A
Q Q
Q
Q
A A
A A
How long should one expect a 4” / 10cm potted plant to
last in the wall?
Can the system be installed outside?
I don’t have access to a drain or supply line, can I still
put in a Versa Wall®
System?
Q Will water spill off the plants or leak into the wall
structure?
Q Can larger plants be put into the Versa Wall®
System?
My wall is adjacent to a window, do I still need
supplemental lighting?
If lighting conditions and maintenance practices are done
as recommended, the plant will be viable for years. While
there will be some small attrition, due to the plant species
we recommend and the controlled growing conditions, root-
bound plants rarely if ever occur in the Versa Wall®
System.
A No, unless installed under an overhang or some kind
of protection from wind and rain, at which time lighting
becomes a consideration.
Yes. While a drain and supply system are preferred,
recirculation tanks can catch and recycle the
water and water caddies or hoses can fill the tanks
especially on smaller walls.
A Since plants wick water from the base of the pot, no water
runs through the growth material or from the leaves to
the floor. Furthermore, the trays interlock and only take a
measured amount of water before the water returns to a
tank or drain so no water leaves the system.
The system is designed for standard industry 4” / 10cm
potted plants to allow maximum design flexibility and
ease of replacement and/or seasonal addition of plants.
Larger plants will not work in the system.
Interior plants need an even flood of 150 fc / 1500 lux
of light provided across the entire surface of the wall
for a min. of 10 to 12 hours per day with a color temp.
of 4000 to 4500° K. We recommend that either Metal
Halide or LED's be used.
