David's mother was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was in college. After her death, David started a support group for students coping with grief called Ailing Mothers and Fathers (AMF) based on his mother's initials. The group met regularly to share their experiences with loss and participate in fundraising events for cancer research. David graduated college and received advanced degrees with the goal of becoming an oncologist to honor his promise to his mother to help others dealing with loss.

By teaming up with a fraternity, they were able to raise $1,000 for the American Cancer Society's efforts to fight cancer.

Andrew was born prematurely and diagnosed with Central Core Disease at 6 months old after many tests. Courtney researched Central Core Disease and worked with a friend of Andrew's family, Stephanie Frady, to plan the fundraiser. They held the event at a church with BBQ, auctions, and t-shirt/merchandise sales. A donated motorcycle sold for $14,200. 1) Matt Herrod was an honor student and athlete who suffered a traumatic brain injury after jumping from a balcony to avoid police at a party on April 1, 2011.
2) He was airlifted to a trauma center and was in a coma for three weeks, requiring extensive rehabilitation to relearn basic functions.
3) Through determination and hard work in therapy, Matt has recovered much of his abilities, but still struggles with speech, balance, and weakness on his right side. He uses his story to inspire others.

Currently, Nick is recovering from a back injury which has impacted him physically, socially, and emotionally. He hopes to one day own a home and skydive. Nick is grateful for his 8th grade teacher who prepared him well for high school. In the future, he sees himself working at Vons and continuing his education.

- 2. The Grief Encounter > July 17, 2003 David Fajgenbaum called his parent in Raleigh, NC, after his first football practice. His dad, a surgeon, said: “ Son, your mom has brain cancer.”
- 3. FACING GRIEF • He went home and decided to drop out from college. • However, Anna Marie Fajgenbaum was adamant that her son return to Georgetown. • David threw himself into his studies and grew increasingly isolated.
- 4. THE PROMISE • One October evening, when David was visiting, Anna Marie woke up weeping. She was worried about David and his two sisters. • David said: “Mom, Im going to be okay. And I’m going to help other kids cope with loss.”
- 5. Doing His Promise • David decided to create a support group which he called – Ailing Mothers and Fathers (based on his mother’s initials) Sadly, Anna Marie later that month. > David started hearing from friends who had never known that his mom was sick.
- 6. • He learned that nearly half of college students had lost a loved one within the previous years. • They decided to meet every other week to share what they were going through and how they were coping. • They raised money. • They participated in the Ironman 10K for cancer research, walked to battle ALS, and run to defeat cancer.
