Tracy Sylka conducted a study that found college men felt pressure from increasingly muscular male images in media to adhere to a certain body type. Many reported developing eating disorders from obsessively cutting out food groups and using protein to maintain their idealized physique. Studies show as many as 3 million men in the US use steroids not for athletic purposes but to improve appearance based on media portrayals of masculinity. The objectification of men has led to billions spent annually on grooming and appearance as well as rising rates of eating disorders among men influenced by conflicting and unrealistic standards of masculinity promoted in media.
