The MOU signed between the Indian Green Building Council and the Karnataka government will make green initiatives at Lalbagh Botanical Garden benchmarks for a new Pilot Green Landscape Rating System. As part of the MOU, they will work together to identify opportunities to improve existing parks in Karnataka and incorporate green landscape design into government projects. The two-day Green Landscape Summit aims to make indoor and outdoor spaces more environmentally friendly.

1. Green Initiatives at Lalbagh will become benchmarks
MOU Signed between Indian Green Building Council and Karnataka Government
Bangalore: Green initiatives in Lalbagh, Bangalore will lead to Pilot Green Landscape Rating
System, according to an MOU signed between Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and
Horticulture Department, Government of Karnataka on Thursday in Bangalore. The MOU was
signed by Ms Vandita Sharma, Principal Secretary to Government, Horticulture Department,
Government of Karnataka and Dr Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council at the
inaugural session of the 2nd edition of Green Landscape Summit 2012.
As part of the MOU, IGBC and Government of Karnataka will work jointly to identify opportunities
for improvements in existing parks of Karnataka and green landscape design for government
projects in Karnataka.
Green Landscape Summit 2012 with the theme “Transforming Indoor & Outdoor Landscapes” is a
two day conference aimed at finding ways and means to make building spaces more greener and
eco-friendly.
Ms Vandita Sharma, Principal Secretary to Government, Horticulture Department, Government of
Karnataka, said, “Tomorrow Lalbagh is celebrating 100 years of flower show. From this year
onwards, the show will have green landscape focus. Government is keen to take the outcomes of
the two day summit and find ways to implement them. Government is willing to formulate agenda
of action points for Karnataka based on the outcomes of the summit.”
Mr Syed Mohammad Beary, Chairman- Bangalore Chapter, Indian Green Building Council, said,
“There are over 135 green buildings in Bangalore. Our chapters focus is to convince governments
to make green landscapes, part of every building.”

2. Dr Chandrasekhar Hariharan, Chairman, Green Landscape Summit 2012, said, “By 2030, India
will be the most populous country in the world. So there is a need for sustainable forestry to
neutralize the carbon that increases with increased population. The summit wants to find ways on
how all stakeholders can be engaged to make urban living and commercial spaces green
spaces.”
Mr Anil Kumar V Epur, Past Chairman, CII (SR) & Chairman, Green Landscape Committee, said,
“ Green landscape covers all spaces including roofs. Green Landscape directory launched today
has more than 2,000 listings. Green Landscape will address many environmental issues. So it is
essential for all of us to contribute to the green movement.”
Dr Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council, said, “CII made the world’s greenest
building Green Business centre in 2003 in Hyderabad. IGBC movement is to revive the old
wisdom to keep harmony with the nature, though we use all modern technologies. Being one of
the most water-deficit-nation, we need to do more in water conservation. Coming generations will
not have water if we destroy water bodies. Water degradation should be stopped. If we give the
rivers a time to breath, they revive their original purity.”
Mr P Teva Raj, Director- Industry, CUGE & National Parks Board explained the the challenges
and achievements in greening Singapore. He said, “Singapore has an obsession to softening or
greening vehicular flyovers. We were using vacant areas as tree banks. We created ecological
and theme parks throughout Singapore. We created Park connector network. In the 710 square
kilometer area of entire Singapore, park connector network aims to have 360 km by 2015, and
180 km was already completed by 2011. By conserving natural heritage of Singapore, we
enriched biodiversity in our urban environment. We increased green coverage in spite of
increased population.”
Ms Vandita Sharma released the Green Landscape Directory brought out by CII and Indian
Green Building Council. Dr Prem C Jain launched www.greenlandscape.in website. Mr Anil
Kumar V Epur launched the Green Landscape brochure.
