THE TRAINS DEMISE
By 1898 Puerto Rico experiences the industrial revolution that swept
the 20th C. Under newly appointed American rule and in response to
Ford automobile development, train lines cease to operate, and by
1954 the stations close. Therefore leaving the agricultural zones of the
island without a means for the transportation of goods.
The train station closures also result in the loss of architectural
patrimony since the elimination of these structures will be key to the
elimination of the societies links to Spanish rule.
THE TRAIN TODAY: THE URBAN TRAIN
The collective transportation system has only been
developed for the capital city, San Juan. Isolated from the
capital, the neighboring districts remain dependent on the
automobile as their only means of transportation

LINE RE-INTEGRATION
SOUTH WEST IMPORTANCE
Train development in the south west region of Puerto Rico will kick
off during the 19th C. as a result of the regions sugar cane
plantations. The train will be the favored method of transportation for
Agricultural goods.
The 20th C. Industrial Revolution will reverse the agricultural
significance of the region. The paradigm shift will move citizens out
of the fields and into factories. Transport of goods becomes
unnecessary and the train is deemed obsolete.
Problems resulting from train abandonment
Sociocultural degradation and lack of environmental
sensibility.
•Intensive use of the automobile as the only means of
transportation.
•lack of collective consciousness regarding
environmental effects of pollutant emissions.
•Pollution.

*The intent of these slides is to provide a comparison of the
region with the rest of the island in order to establish the
South West as zone of importance. Poles have been

SITE
LA PARGUERA
Fishermen's village open to nautical tourism. The
anarchical development of unplanned structures have led
to ecological degradation of the site. Mangrove trees,
coral reef barriers, and luminescent bays have been
impacted by the lack of environmental surveillance that a
site of this nature would require.

HEART OF THE PROJECT
Creation of a terminus that will be located at the end of a
new line that will stem from the ancient train line
This terminus is meant to provide a new point of
departure for pedestrian circulation and site exploration.
The line and terminus will integrate into the existing fabric
while permitting vehicular separation from the endemic
ecosystem.
