THE GREAT
COMMISSION:
The Authority
Behind It:
Jesus Christ
Matthew 28:18
Luke 24:44
John 20:21-23
Acts 1:4-8
Matthew 28:18 NET Then
Jesus came up and said
to them, "All authority in
heaven and on earth has
been given to me.
The “Son of God,”
as
“Creator,”
had an original right to all
things, to control them and
dispose of them.
John 1:1 NET In the
beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with
God, and the Word was
fully God. 2 The Word was
with God in the beginning.
3 All things were
created by him, and
apart from him not
one thing was created
that has been created.
Colossians 1:15 NET He is the
image of the invisible God, the
firstborn over all creation, 16
for all things in heaven and on
earth were created by him —
all things,
whether visible or invisible,
whether thrones or
dominions, whether
principalities or powers —
all things were created
through him and for him.
17 He himself is before all
things and all things are held
together in him.
But the universe is put under
him more particularly as
Mediator, that he might
redeem his
people;that he might gather a
church; that he might defend
his chosen; that he might
subdue all their enemies, and
bring them off conquerors and
more than conquerors,
Ephesians 1:20 NET This
power he exercised in
Christ when he raised him
from the dead and seated
him at his right hand in the
heavenly realms
21 far above every rule and
authority and power and
dominion and every name that
is named, not only in this age
but also in the one to come. 22
And God put all things
under Christ's feet, and he
gave him to the church as
head over all things. 23
Now the church is his body,
the fullness of him who fills
all in all.
1 Corinthians 15:24 NET
Then comes the end, when
he hands over the kingdom
to God the Father, when he
has brought to an end all
rule and all authority
and power. 25 For he must
reign until he has put all his
enemies under his feet. 26
The last enemy to be
eliminated is death. 27 For he
has put everything in
subjection
under his feet. (Psalms 8:6) But
when it says "everything"
has been put in subjection,
it is clear that this does not
include the one who put
everything in subjection
to him. 28 And when all things
are subjected to him, then the
Son himself will be subjected
to the one who subjected
everything to him, so that God
may be all in all.
John 5:22 NET Furthermore,
the Father does not judge
anyone, but has assigned
all judgment to the Son, 23
so that all people will honor
the Son just as
they honor the Father.
The one who does not
honor the Son does not
honor the Father who
sent him.
Philippians 2:5 NET You should
have the same attitude toward
one another that Christ Jesus
had, 6 who though he existed
in the form of God did not
regard
equality with God as something
to be grasped, 7 but emptied
himself by taking on the form
of a slave, by looking like
other men, and by sharing in
human nature.
8 He humbled himself, by
becoming obedient to the point
of death — even death on a
cross! 9 As a result God
exalted him and gave him the
name that is above every
name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow — in
heaven and on earth and under
the earth — 11 and every
tongue confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord to the glory of
God the Father.
It is in reference to this,
doubtless, that he speaks here
power or authority committed
to him over all things, that he
might redeem, defend, and
save the church purchased
with his own blood. His
mediatorial government
extends, therefore, over the
material world, over angels,
over devils, over wicked men,
and over his own people. (Barnes)
Luke 24:44 NET Then he said to
them, "These are my words
that I spoke to you while I was
still with you, that everything
written about me in the law of
Moses and the
prophets and the psalms must be
fulfilled."
Jesus created all, then allowed
His creation to sacrifice Him
for the sins of the ages. What
Authority & Power!
John 20:21 NET So Jesus said to
them again, "Peace be with
you. Just as the Father has
sent me, I also send you." 22
And after he said this, he
breathed on them and
said, "Receive the Holy
Spirit. 23 If you forgive
anyone's sins, they are
forgiven; if you retain
anyone's sins, they are
retained.”
As I was sent to proclaim the
truth of the Most High, and to
convert sinners to God, I send
you for the very same purpose,
clothed with the very same
authority, and influenced by
the very same Spirit. (Clarke)
Acts 1:4 NET While he was
with them, he declared, "Do
not leave Jerusalem, but
wait there for what my
Father promised, which you
heard about
from me. 5 For John baptized
with water, but you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit
not many days from now." 6 So
when they had gathered
together, they began to
ask him, "Lord, is this the
time when you are restoring
the kingdom to Israel?" 7
He told them, "You are not
permitted to know the times
or periods that the Father
has set by his own
authority. 8 But you will receive
power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you, and you
will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, and in all
Judea and Samaria, and to the
farthest parts of the earth.”
Not the “power” about which
they were concerned (political
organization and equipments
for
empire on the order of Rome).
Their very question was ample
proof of their need of this new
“power” (dunamin), to enable
them (from dunamai, to be
able), to
grapple with the spread of the
gospel in the world. (Robertson’s
Word Pictures)
you will be my witnesses; of the
person of Christ, of his deity
and sonship, of his incarnation,
his
ministry, and his miracles, of his
suffering and death, of his
resurrection from the dead, and
his ascension to heaven. This
was to be their work, and what
belong to them,
and not to enquire about a
temporal kingdom, and the
setting up of that, and the
times and seasons of it; their
business was to testify of the
sufferings of Christ, and the
glory
that followed, and to
preach a crucified
Jesus, as the only
Saviour of lost sinners:

Luke 24:47 NET and

John 20:28 NET Thomas replied
to him, "My Lord and my
God!" 29 Jesus said to him,
"Have you believed because
you have seen me? Blessed are
the people who have
not seen and yet have believed."
30 Now Jesus performed many
other miraculous signs in the
presence of the disciples,
which are not recorded in this
book.
31 But these are recorded so
that you may believe that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son
of God, and that by
believing you may have life
in his name.

said this, while they were
watching, he was lifted
up and a cloud hid him
from their sight.
10 As they were still staring
into the sky while he was
going, suddenly two men in
white clothing stood near
them 11 and said, "Men of
Galilee, why do you
stand here looking up into
the sky? This same Jesus
who has been taken up from
you into heaven will come
back in the same way you
saw him go into heaven."

former account,
Theophilus, about all that
Jesus began to do and teach
2 until the day he was taken
up to heaven, after he had
given orders by the Holy
Spirit to the apostles he had
chosen. 3 To the same
apostles also, after his
suffering, he presented
himself alive with many
