Future Simple: be going to
Use be going to to talk about:
1 FUTURE PLANS
I am going to visit my
grandma in the summer.
I already bought tickets.
2 PREDICTIONS WITH EVIDENCE
The sky is so cloudy. It is
going to rain very soon.
Structure:
Subject + verb to be + going to + verb + object.
Examples:
● I am going to live in Germany.
● I’m not going to fly to New York this week.
● Is she going to bake a cake?
When to use the verb “GOING TO”?
(1) Future plans
Use going to to announce fixed plans.
Examples:
● I am going to visit my grandmother on Tuesday.
● We are going to fly to the Netherlands next month.
When to use the verb “GOING TO”?
(2) Predictions with evidence
Use going to when we predict something that obviously is going to take place in
the future.
Examples:
● He is going to be late. → (He called to say that he was stuck in traffic).
● It is not going to rain. → (The sky looks very sunny).
Abbreviation of the verb “going to”
Informally, GONNA is used as an abbreviation for going to.
The form “gonna” can also be used without a subject but only if it is 100% clear
what is being talked about.
Examples:
● Gonna be there in a minute.
● I’m gonna do it!
● Are you gonna drink it?
● We’re gonna miss the train.
● You’re not gonna believe this! Do you know what she did?
