Lesson Plan: Verbal Elements and Text
Types
Grade Level: 5th Grade
Duration: 50 minutes
Objectives:
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of various verbal elements used in oral
communication.
- Students will identify different text types and their characteristics.
- Students will construct feedback based on their understanding of verbal elements and text
types.
Materials:
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Markers
- Handout with examples of different text types (narrative, persuasive, informative, etc.)
- Feedback forms or slips of paper
Bell-Ringer Activity (5 minutes):
- Display a short paragraph on the board or projector.
- Ask students to read the paragraph silently and identify any verbal elements they notice (e.g.,
dialogue, descriptive language, figurative language).
- After a few minutes, discuss their findings as a class.
Introduction (5 minutes):
- Explain to students that today's lesson will focus on verbal elements in oral communication
and different text types.
- Discuss the importance of understanding these elements in order to effectively communicate
and provide feedback.
Direct Instruction (10 minutes):
- Write the following verbal elements on the board: dialogue, descriptive language, figurative
language, tone, and volume.
- Define each element and provide examples for each.
- Discuss how these elements contribute to effective oral communication.
Guided Practice (10 minutes):
- Distribute the handout with examples of different text types.
- In pairs or small groups, ask students to read the examples and identify the text type for each
(narrative, persuasive, informative, etc.).
- Have groups share their answers and discuss the characteristics of each text type as a class.
Independent Practice (10 minutes):
- Ask students to individually choose a text type and write a short paragraph using that text type.
- Encourage them to incorporate the verbal elements discussed earlier.
- After they finish writing, have students exchange their paragraphs with a partner and provide
feedback based on the text type and verbal elements used.
Exit Ticket (5 minutes):
- Distribute feedback forms or slips of paper to each student.
- Ask students to write one thing they learned about verbal elements and one thing they learned
about text types during the lesson.
- Collect the feedback forms before the end of the class.
Closure (5 minutes):
- Recap the main points of the lesson, emphasizing the importance of understanding verbal
elements and text types in effective communication.
- Thank the students for their participation and remind them to apply their knowledge in future
communication tasks.
