What is the Sabbath meant for? Jesus highlights that love is key in observance of the Sabbath which was misunderstood and it's rules misused in His day.
The Church has many denominations today. Jesus encourages us to discern the true believers and servants of God and welcome them into our homes as necessity demands.
Who are those who rock the world? The greats of our time and the past. Jesus rhetorically highlights the characteristics of true greatness giving us an example of John the Baptist.

C. S. Lewis’ reaction to the Sermon on the Mount stated, “As to ‘caring for’ the Sermon on the Mount, if ‘caring for’ here means ‘liking’ or enjoying, I suppose no one ‘cares for’ it. Who can like being knocked flat on his face by a sledgehammer? I can hardly imagine a more deadly spiritual condition than that of a man who can read that passage with tranquil pleasure.” Certainly, in consideration of this beatitude and promise of persecution, this observation is profoundly true.
Why does Jesus spend more time on persecution than on any of the other attributes or beatitudes of a follower of His? (Jn. 15:18-19) How can we, as Christians, protect ourselves from the fiery, verbal darts hurled at us? How do the words of others reveal their heart and character?

Taking care of your soul. A transformation of our conscience, reason, imagination, mind, emotions, choice and will is absolutely necessary to be aligned with the renewed Spirit that is already in us. In order to attain this, the Holy Spirit needs to be in control, bringing a complete renewal.

BLC Sermon - Who do you say I am? - 20110815 Leigh Wong
The very first sermon I delivered at Bangsar Lutheran Church. Based on the week's Lectionary readings, I explored how we could possibly answer Jesus when He asks us, "Who do you say I am?"

This is a study of Jesus being unorthodox. He went against the accepted rules of the Pharisees and it aggravated them to the point of wanting Him crucified.. Jesus did not come to conform but to transform.
Excuse Me, But Your Meanness is Showing - Luke 6.1-11New City Church
Jesus redefines our humanity for us so that we want to relate to others less by lists of silly rules and more by love and compassion.

Why does evil seem to prosper and good suffer? God showers many blessings on the faithful and unfaithful alike. This may even be a catalyst for development of the good.
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

5. SABBATH LOVE
BIBLE PASSAGE
Matt 12:7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire
compassion, and not a sacrifice,’ you would not have
condemned the innocent.
Lord of the Sabbath
8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”9 Departing from
there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And a man was there
whose hand was withered. And they questioned Jesus, asking,
“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might accuse
Him. 11 And He said to them, “What man is there among you
who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he
not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable
then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on
the Sabbath.” 13 Then He *said to the man, “Stretch out your
hand!” He stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like
the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against
Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
6. SABBATH LOVE
BIBLE PASSAGE
Mark 3:3 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a
man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were
looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him
closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3 Jesus said
to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of
everyone.”
4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to
do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained
silent.
5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at
their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6
Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the
Herodians how they might kill Jesus.
7. SABBATH LOVE
BIBLE PASSAGE
Luke 6:6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and
was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was
shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were
looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him
closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus
knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the
shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he
got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the
Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man,
“Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was
completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of
the law were furious and began to discuss with one another
what they might do to Jesus.
8. PREPARATORY
QUESTIONS
1. What had the Pharisees made of the Sabbath day? In
what ways do we violate Sabbath?
2. Although the Pharisees wanted to kill Jesus, Jesus
defied them. In what occasions should we stand for the
truth? Give examples.
3. In Mark 3 Jesus is angry with the Pharisees. In Luke 6 the
Pharisees are angry with Jesus. What are the right and
wrong reasons for righteous anger/
9. BACKGROUND
The man standing before Jesus, as per history was a
construction worker.
Herod built the temple and called for construction workers
who were skilled in various aspects.
They were asked to work on Sunday.
After the temple was built, the Jewish leaders cut off their
hands to penalize them for working on Sabbath.
Now they were looking for a reason to destroy Jesus
Dr Ron Charles
10. BACKGROUND -
DESTRUCTION
The Pharisees cut the hand.
In righteous zeal they were doing Satan’s work of destruction
They cut the family off
They cut the man from worshipping normally – he had to take
back seat.
Now they were conniving to cut off Jesus – God Himself
11. BACKGROUND -
RESTORATION
Jesus knew their intentions, yet continued His acts of mercy.
He goes to God’s house though it is polluted with corrupt
leaders.
He contradicted their authority by demonstrating true
leadership
He asked the man to stand in front for all to see.
He restored the hand.
He still tries to teach the corrupt leaders God’s love
12. HE SAW
STUBBORNNESS
Luke 6:6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue
and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand
was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law
were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched
him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But
Jesus knew what they were thinking ..
Mark 3:5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply
distressed at their stubborn hearts,
13. HE SAW
STUBBORNNESS
Jesus continued to teach and heal in the synagogue
Inspite of poor leadership
Inspite of hardness of heart and opposition
14. HE SAW
STUBBORNNESS
He was angry but more so, deeply distressed.
As Lord He had the right to be angry at his children being
abused by those He trusted
Do we grieve at others’ hardness?
15. HE SPOKE
SOUNDNESS
Luke 6:8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to
the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front
of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.
9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the
Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy
it?”
Matthew 12:11 And He said to them, “What man is there
among you who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the
Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How
much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is
lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
16. HE SPOKE
SOUNDNESS
There was no anger in His speech. He
continued to teach the right attitude
with patience.
When we correct others, is it with
positivity?
17. HE SHOWED
KINDNESS
Matthew 12:13 Then He *said to the man, “Stretch out your
hand!” He stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like
the other.
19. RESULT
The man went away with
A new hand
A new life
The Pharisees went away – with
shrivelled hearts unwilling to
listen to Jesus
20. RESULT
When we stand up for Christ and show His love,
There will be healing
And opposition
We have to be prepared to face both.
21. OUR RESPONSE
Jesus is speaking to hard hearts
Of those who don’t know Him
Of us who know Him
Are we listening?

Editor's Notes
Godliness vs goodness
Godliness, goodness and
Compassion not sacrifice – Sunday ritual and offering not as important as empathizing and identifying with fellow believers
Save not condemn – accuse, conspire, destroy the chosen instead of saving the lost..where is our focus? Are we searching for lost sheep in our churches or too busy criticizing leaders and others
Honour the Lord not question Him – The best form of honour is to obey even the most difficult commands even if we don’t understand. Our questions should be directed to truly learn not find fault. Honour authorities God has placed..
Good not harm – bearing christ’s yoke involves doing good on Sunday..we don’t rest from good deeds. We rest from regular routines. We invest spiritually
Lifting up not casting out - the paralyic permanent write off – how many people do we write off instead of helping and picking them up. We have our own list of unpardonable sins
Restore not destroy – Not only pick them up, but work with them to restore them.
Soul Rest not merely physical rest
They had added their rules to God’s law
Their rules became more important than God’s law
They eventually became a direct contradiction to God’s law
Stubborn hearts
When hearts don’t respond to God, they become agents of Satan
Jesus was angry and deeply distressed with them.
But he demonstrated
Through healing
And love
That this man deserved to have his place in society.
Jesus did not argue
He just showed God’s love
Rather than repenting they continued their destructive designs.
Matthew 12:14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
Most often Satan will incite people against us when we are truly doing the Lord’s work. Are we facing opposition for the right reasons – be glad – we’re on the right track.
God wants us to show nothing but love and mercy to all around – Christians first and then non Christians.
He wants us to break the barriers built by fake righteous leaders
He wants us to bring healing – even when it comes with a price
