3. DEFINITION OF PROM
Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is the rupture of
the foetal membranes before the onset of labor.
In most cases, this occurs near term, but when membrane
rupture occurs before 37 weeks’ gestation, it is known as
preterm PROM.
4. increases risk for PROM?
• Premature delivery or PROM in a past pregnancy
• Infection, such as a sexually transmitted infection (STI),
pneumonia, or urinary tract infection (UTI)
• Large uterus caused by more than 1 baby or extra
amniotic fluid
• Surgery on your cervix or an amniocentesis
• Abnormally shaped uterus or a short cervix
• Vaginal bleeding during the second or third trimester
• Poor nutrition, alcohol, or smoking
5. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
• Regular or frequent sensations of abdominal
tightening (contractions)
• Constant low, dull backache
• A sensation of pelvic or lower abdominal
pressure
• Mild abdominal cramps
• Vaginal spotting or light bleeding
• A change in type of vaginal discharge —
watery, mucus-like or bloody
6. Diagnosis
• Testing of the pH of the vaginal fluid using a
pH test or a nitrazine test
• Observing a fern-like pattern of the vaginal
fluid under a microscope
• Detecting vernix or meconium in the vaginal
fluid
• Performing other tests such as ultrasound,
amniotic fluid index, or indigo carmine dye
test
7. TREATMENT
• If you are within 3 weeks of your due date,
your doctor or midwife may have you wait for
a few hours to see if you go into labour on
your own. Or they might induce labour for
you. Most women go into labour within 12
hours on their own.
11. • Ante partum fatal death Infection of the
placenta.
• Placental abruption.
• Postpartum infection.
• Separation of the placenta from the uterus.
12.
13. Fatal complication
When PROM occurs too early, surviving
neonates may develop sequelae such as.
• Malpresentation,
• Cord compression,
• Oligohydramnios,
• Necrotizing enterocolitis,
• Neurologic impairment,
• Intraventricular hemorrhage,
