The GPS was invented by the U.S. Army during the Cold War as a military technology. The first GPS satellite was launched in 1973. While originally intended for military use, GPS has become widely used in civilian applications like in cars, planes, and boats to provide location services and navigation assistance by using computer networks to store and access reference points and directions. GPS has replaced the need for maps and attention to road signs for many users by providing a simpler way to get directions and destinations.
