The ancient Romans established a republic to prevent any one person from having too much power. Citizens elected consuls to govern for one year terms and couldn't be reelected for 10 years, as well as magistrates to judge legal cases and manage finances and tribunes to protect ordinary citizens. Retired magistrates joined the senate to advise the consuls.
