Game of Thrones
Seven new characters that will make Season 3 great
With little over a month before the biggest show on
Television returns to our screens, anticipation is at an all
time high. We’re all looking forward to the return of our old
favourite characters From badasses like Jaime Lannister,
Sandor Clegane and of course the mighty Tywin Lannister
to fan favorites like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow and
everybody’s favourite half-man, Tyrion Lannister.

But what about the new faces? On a series of this scale,
new characters are always going to play a huge role. So
who should non-book readers be looking out for
throughout Season 3?

This may contain minor spoilers. Also, it’s worth noting
that 7-2 on the list could really be any order. But number
one is far and away the one I’m looking forward to the
most.
Honourable mentions
Daario Naharis – Won’t play a huge role this season,
but the Tyroshi sellsword should bring an energy to
Dany’s storyline we haven’t seen since Khal Drogo.

Jojen and Meera Reed – Omitted from season 2, but the two children of
Ned Stark’s old friend, Howland Reed will play a large role in Bran’s
storyline. With the little kid from Love Actually all grown up and playing
Jojen, it should be interesting to see.

Walder Frey – Not really a new character since we did see him briefly in
season 1, hence being dumped in this section. However without giving
too much away, he’s going to be kind of a big deal.
7. Brynden Tully
(Played by Clive Russell)
Catelyn Stark’s enigmatic
uncle will play a large role in
her story this season. His
introduction this season
suggests they may alter his
story from the book slightly,
but if he’s half as cool and
fearless in the series as he is
in the book, he’s sure to bring
a different type of character
entirely to the whole
Riverlands plot.
6. Tormund
Giantsbane
(Played by Kristopher Hivju)
Another grade A badass and
lovable wildling warrior. Pictures
have been released of Hivju in full
costume and the makeup and
costuming departments have
done a great job. The end of Jon’s
storyline in Season 2 set up some
pretty exciting stuff. Tormund will
take on the role of Jon’s friend
amongst his hostile new
companions and will definitely be
another fan favourite.
5. Mance
Rayder (Played by Ciaran
Hinds)
Grade A badassery seems to be
developing into a common
theme here. The King Beyond
the Wall is probably the most
‘important’ new character this
season. As evidence by the
pretty high-profile casting
choice. Everything Jon Snow
does this season will revolve
around Mance, not just this
year, but in future seasons as
well.
4. Beric
Dondarrion (Played by
Richard Dormer)

Another character who has
technically appeared before, but
completely recast and revamped
into another potential fan
favourite. His flaming sword and
an epic fight with another
estranged character could prove
to be an iconic moment in this
season but the series as a whole.
Arya always seems to get the
best characters in her storyline.
3. Vargo Hoat
(Played by Noah Taylor)
The slobbering Qohorik sellsword
could emerge as this season’s
second best new villain. An
obnoxious character in the books
and the casting of Noah Taylor,
well known for being a little
creepy, the show should follow
suit. His name does appear to
have been changed to ‘Locke’ for
the show, which may suggest a
slight alteration in his storyline.
But either way, he’s going to have
a big hand in major turning points
for at least one character.
2. Orell (Played by
MacKenzie Crook)

Nobody can really say who or
what Orell is or what role he’s
going to play. His character is
actually dead by this point in the
books and didn’t play a massive
role, so the assumption is he will
be a composite character of a few
wildlings that facilitate Jon’s
character arc. However,
Mackenzie Crook is an excellent
actor and a fairly high profile one
at that. His inclusion is something
to get excited about in itself.
1. Ramsay Snow
(Played by Iwan Rheon)
Not only is Ramsay the most
intriguing character to enter the
fray in Season 3, but arguably the
most interesting character in the
entire series. Without giving too
much away, this monster will
make viewers breath a sigh of
relief whenever Joffrey appears
on screen. And perhaps, may
even generate a little sympathy
for a forgotten character who
most would say deserves none.
