The Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center (Gundersen NCPTC) aims to end child abuse through training and education for professionals, having trained over 100,000 people since 2003. The center distributes newsletters, supports community education, and hosts various training events across multiple locations including universities and community colleges. With an updated training facility and ongoing partnerships, Gundersen NCPTC remains committed to its mission of child protection while expanding its curriculum and professional support initiatives.

2. The Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center
(Gundersen NCPTC) works to end all forms of child abuse,
neglect and exploitation through training, education,
advocacy, prevention and awareness, providing care and
treatment for children, families and adult survivors.
Since its inception in 2003, more than 100,000 child
protection professionals have been trained in all 50 states
and 17 countries. Training topics include: child abuse,
investigations, forensic interviewing and multidisciplinary
team training. Gundersen NCPTC actively strives to prepare
future front-line professionals to recognize and report
the abuse of children, through the implementation of
Gundersen NCPTC model curricula. Furthermore, the
staff provides technical assistance to child protection
professionals and victim/survivor assistance on an
ongoing basis. They also publish monthly and quarterly
newsletters and distribute them to tens of thousands of
child protection professionals.
In February 2013, NCPTC merged with Gundersen Health
System (GHS). Gundersen’s Integrated Center for Education
enhances NCPTC’s ability to train professionals in the field.

3. Training Centers
Gundersen NCPTC’s main training center is located on the
Winona State University (WSU) campus. This state-of-the-art complex
includes five mock court rooms, four forensic interview training rooms
and a mock house in which simulated child abuse investigations are
conducted. As part of the collaboration with WSU, Gundersen NCPTC
staff and WSU faculty have developed the model undergraduate
minor curriculum and certificate program entitled Child Advocacy
Studies (CAST).
NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) currently
serves as Gundersen NCPTC's Southern Region Training Center.
The Melba Shewmaker Center opens January 2014 and includes
mock court rooms, interactive video and flexible use space. This
center will provide training, publications and the CAST curriculum
implementation, as well as technical and forensic interviewing
assistance, specifically to the 15 southern U.S. states.
New Mexico State University (NMSU) serves as Gundersen
NCPTC’s Southwestern Region Training Center. NMSU is an ideal
partner due to the university’s extensive community outreach, the
quality of its CAST curriculum and NMSU’s experience in delivering
training and services over large, mostly rural distances, as well as its
experience in working with underrepresented and limited resource
populations. NMSU’s region includes New Mexico, Arizona,
Southern California and West Texas at its initial launch, and
may expand to serve other states.

Gundersen NCPTC’s webinar trainings for professionals include a
live question-and-answer portion to allow for interaction between
presenter and participants. Gundersen NCPTC applies for MN CLE and
MN POST Board credits, as well as AR CLEST and CLE Board credits for
all webinars. Webinars are approximately 1.75 to 2 hours.

In this course, peer review practices will be used to improve the
ability of forensic interviewers and multidisciplinary teams (MDTs)
to generate corroborating evidence. MDTs will watch several child
interviews and discuss what, if anything, the interviewer could have
done to elicit additional information from the child that could have
translated into corroborating evidence. The attendees will also share
their own forensic interviews and participate in a peer review of their
own work. No significant experience is required. Gundersen NCPTC

Applications may be completed individually or as a MDT. Each
application must contain a professional who practices forensic

Chaplains for Children is designed for clergy, chaplains, youth
ministers, faith leaders, counselors and other members of a faith
community who may work with children or families impacted by
child abuse. The course prepares students to recognize and respond
to cases of sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and
neglect. The course discusses in detail the impact of child abuse on
a victim’s sense of spirituality and offers concrete suggestions for
working with medical and mental health professionals to assist a
child in coping with maltreatment. The course also discusses
ideal child protection policies for a faith-based institution, including
handling a situation in which a convicted sex offender seeks to
join a congregation. The course includes a review of various child
abuse case scenarios and a discussion on appropriate and
inappropriate responses.

15. NDAA ChildProtect: Trial Advocacy Course for Civil
Child Protection Attorneys

ChildProtect is an intensive five-day trial advocacy course designed
for child protection prosecutors/attorneys handling civil dependency
cases. Sponsored by the National District Attorneys Association’s
National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse and co-sponsored by
Gundersen NCPTC, selected students will participate in a mock trial to
terminate parental rights with the assistance of 15 child protection
prosecutors and specialists experienced in trial advocacy. The mock
trial fact pattern addresses several medical and psychological issues,
including abusive head trauma and psychological profiling.

16. Prevention and education programs
Center for Effective Discipline
The Center for Effective (CED) supports Gundersen NCPTC’s mission
of ending child abuse by providing educational information to the
public about the effects of corporal punishment on children and
alternatives to its use.
CED advocates for ending corporal punishment in schools in all 50
states. Currently, 31 states prohibit this practice. If you want to help
stop this punishment in the remaining 19 states, please contact us.
Important events for the CED program include:

SpankOut Day USA is sponsored by Gundersen NCPTC’s CED
program. April 30 is a day when all parents, grandparents,
guardians and people working with children are encouraged to

Jacob Wetterling Resource Center
The Jacob Wetterling Resource Center (JWRC) became a program
of Gundersen NCPTC in February 2010. The merger was an effort to
combine the groups’ resources and strengthen common efforts to
ensure every child grows up in a healthy, safe world—a world free
from abuse, abduction and exploitation. JWRC was originally founded
in 1990 by Patty and Jerry Wetterling following their son’s abduction

This national conference is designed for attorneys, investigators,

course will assist professionals in recognizing the factors in their

be implemented in their communities and offer suggestions for

center located at Alliant International University.

assisting with direct professional services, program
evaluation and consulting to promote violencefree living. Gundersen NCPTC has served on

allegations of abuse, and was found to enhance the
ability of prosecutors to file appropriate charges.

William Mitchell College of Law (WMCL)
offers a degree in practical wisdom. William
Mitchell’s curriculum combines legal theory with
practical skills training. Students will graduate with
knowledge of the law and real-world experience
counseling clients, researching cases, negotiating
deals, writing legal briefs and appearing before
judges. Gundersen NCPTC is collaborating with
William Mitchell to develop LLM and online
certificate programs for child protection

Abuse (NCPCA), part of the National District
Attorneys Association (NDAA), has a long history
of collaborating with Gundersen NCPTC on several
training events. This valuable affiliation has
