The document summarizes key global and national HIV/AIDS statistics and commitments made at the 2011 UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS. The meeting resulted in commitments to reduce new HIV infections, increase access to antiretroviral treatment, and eliminate stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV by 2015. Globally in 2011, there were an estimated 2.5 million new HIV infections and 1.7 million AIDS-related deaths. In the Philippines, HIV-related discrimination remains an issue, with people living with HIV reporting verbal abuse, job loss, and denial of healthcare.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By damaging your immune system, HIV interferes with your body's ability to fight infection and disease.
The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), launched in 1992, is being implemented as a comprehensive programme for prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in India. Over time, the focus has shifted from raising awareness to behavior change, from a national response to a more decentralized response and to increasing involvement of NGOs and networks of PLHIV.
