Dear Rachel:
It’s hard to believe we’ve now been in the new building exactly a year. As we mark
our first anniversary, I wanted to personally thank you for all that you’ve done to
make the New Jersey Institute for Food, Nutrition, and Health such a success. You
have been an energetic and creative partner in this adventure from the beginning
and through your efforts Harvest has become one of the crown jewels of the
institute.
I came to Rutgers to build a transformative interdisciplinary institute here on Cook
Campus, a special home for its members, a place where science is on display and
a destination for the communities we serve. In many homes, the kitchen is where
everyone gathers. In this regard, Harvest is very much our kitchen, a place of
warmth, easy conversation, and, of course, fabulous food! Your food is a culinary
experience, from the beautiful broths to the beet burgers, to the glorious grain
salads and smoothies. You deliver your creativity and commitment to fresh,
minimally-processed, healthy fare in a way that dazzles our palates and improves
our health.
I also wanted to thank you for your creative contributions beyond that of food, such
as your design and marketing work. You did a superb job developing the logo,
messaging and communication strategy that launched Harvest. Finally, I wanted to
thank you for being the consummate event host. I remember well the dinner we
organized for a group of senior nutrition academics from around the country. They
were all very impressed with your charismatic presence and ability to tell a story
about the dinner you had just prepared and everyone couldn’t wait to taste. The
meal, it goes without saying, was outstanding!
Thank you again for a wonderful year of culinary contributions and leadership that
turned the vision of Harvest into a reality.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Gillies, PhD
