Corporate social responsibility by Monika SukhijaMonika Sukhija
This document discusses corporate social responsibility (CSR) in India. It provides background on the concept and definitions of CSR, noting that while CSR originated in the 1950s, it did not become popular in India until the late 1980s/2000s. The document also outlines the legal requirements for CSR spending under the Indian Companies Act of 2013 and provides examples of CSR initiatives undertaken by companies like TCS, Titan, KPMG, Infosys, NIIT, and HUL.
The document proposes a social enterprise called "Profits for People" that aims to reduce rural poverty and unemployment in India. It does this by organizing the rural poor into cooperatively-owned businesses that provide back-office services like data entry and digitization. These businesses would partner with large firms and small businesses to provide cost-effective services while generating profits and dividends for cooperative members. The plan is to start a cooperative in Trichy, India that employs 400,000 educated rural youth, providing incomes and reducing the need for urban migration.
