This self project was an attempt to explore various gestures and interactions in a curved mobile screen. The curved form of the screen inspires a series a intuitive and interesting interactions.
Aerial shots are taken from above the scene to define the world and geography. Bird's-eye views look down on the action from above to show positions and motions. High angle shots make characters feel vulnerable by looking down on them. Eye level shots show a human perspective without looking up or down. Low angle shots make subjects appear dominant by looking up at them. Oblique or Dutch angles use a tilted camera to portray unease or provide a wider perspective.

This document defines and describes various camera shots and techniques used in filmmaking. It provides definitions for different types of shots including aerial shots, close ups, establishing shots, hand-held shots, high and low angle shots, point-of-view shots, shallow and soft focus, tight and wide shots, tilts, tracks, pans, zooms and more. Each shot is explained in terms of how it is filmed and how it can be used to achieve different effects or perspectives.
The document discusses various techniques for composing photographs, including the rule of thirds which involves dividing the frame into thirds and positioning key elements along those lines. It also covers using leading lines to guide the eye, incorporating symmetry and patterns, using foreground, middle ground and background to create depth of field, framing with natural frames, and considering viewpoint such as bird's eye or worm's eye views.
The document discusses key camera angle decisions that can be made before recording, including high angles, low angles, eye-level angles, and oblique angles. Each angle can convey different meanings - for example, a high angle may suggest vulnerability or power, while a low angle may indicate status. Eye-level shots can encourage identification, and oblique angles may imply imbalance. The document also mentions useful camera movement terms like pan, tilt, and tracking shots.

An establishing shot provides context by showing where the action takes place. A wide shot shows a full scene while a long shot frames a person or object as most important. Medium shots are usually from the waist up and are used during dialogue. Close ups emphasize specific details while extreme close ups are dramatic. Point of view shots see through a character's eyes. Over the shoulder shots frame a person from behind another's head. Two shots show relationships. Overhead shots provide a bird's eye view. Camera angles like high and low manipulate perspective and power dynamics. Camera movements like pans, tilts, tracks, zooms and dollys follow or emphasize action. Symmetry balances a frame while asymmetry creates disorder. The rule of thirds
The document provides tips for effective photojournalism techniques including composition, lighting, point of view, balance, and capturing spontaneous moments. It discusses framing subjects using the rule of thirds and placing the subject off-center for interest. Different lighting conditions like direct sunlight, backlighting, and indoor lighting are addressed. Spontaneous photos should not be recreated with posing but captured as the event unfolds naturally. Practice is emphasized to improve photojournalism skills.

As part of my Semester Thesis Project, we conducted a participatory research to explore the smart-space design avenues for retail environments in Urban India. This project was completed under the guidance of Prof. Pradeep G. Yammiyavar, Department of Design, IIT Guwahati. The need to undertake this research was felt with the ever-growing footfall and increasing spending capacity of the Indian consumer within limited space. As a result, we intend to understand the design parameters considered by shopping malls and marts to layout their merchandise.
The activity conducted to understand the trade-off between maximizing profit along with high consumer satisfaction required store managers to create a custom layout of a store given a set of merchandise and limited area. Findings of the exercise reveal that the parameters affecting space layout and product display fall under the umbrella of architectural norms & constraints, marketing strategy and consumer behavior. These insights helped in identifying and iterating on several smart space design opportunities for urban retailers with limited display space.
User Experience in Retail Environment: An Analysis Arushi Singh
This document outlines a semester thesis project analyzing user experience in retail environments. The project timeline runs from January to April 2014 and includes phases for problem identification, user research, design, prototyping, and testing. The project aims to study how parameters like space, vision, and movement impact shopping experiences and maximize in-store communication. Methodology includes understanding retail challenges through literature review and documentation before designing a layout solution and obtaining user feedback. Case studies of three Indian retailers are analyzed for factors like product display, foot traffic, and store layout.
The document discusses designing multimodal interactions for cockpit controls, including replacing buttons and knobs with touchscreens and voice/gesture controls. It outlines research on existing avionics systems, display technologies, and cockpit interactions. The proposed concepts include replacing the yoke with touchscreens or gesture controls, implementing space-saving and adjustable displays, and developing task-based multimodal interfaces and automated troubleshooting systems.

2. FLOATING PHOTOS: Delete action
Gestures
The flow of mighty waterfalls inspires the concept of floating photos. To
delete the photos, the user can select the required photo and ‘push’ it
into the ‘waterfall’.
The curved surface acts as the fall of the waterfall. The user flicks the
image towards the waterfall to delete it. The user can hear the ‘splash’
sound while deleting the photo.

3. CONJURING PHOTOS : Opening photo albums
Gestures
Inspiration for ‘Conjuring photos ‘was taken from an hour glass as the
photos appear magically from the curved screen of the Samsung
Youm . The gestures for opening the photos in album gain inspiration
from the way sand moves from one compartment to another .
The user can view the albums easily. Scrolling is also possible by thumb
movement across the screen. One can view the photos in an album by
easy flick gesture.

FLIPPING PHOTOS: Opening photo albums
Flipping of images is inspired by natural way of turning pages in thick
books. We often tend to hold the book and rapidly scroll the pages by
using our thumb.
The user can view the photos by using the tactile feel of the curved
surface. It is intuitive to flick the curved surface by our thumb and it
gives the feeling of a thick photo album.

People have a tendency to keep personal memories in creative
ways. ‘Bookmarks and scrapbooks’ is inspired from the same human
behavior.
The Samsung Galaxy youm, has a very tactile feel . This surface can
be used to place bookmarks in our photo scrap books
The user can create scrapbooks by compiling photos and videos
