4. PROJECT TIME: Now, let's color our own version of
"La Grande Jatte"...using Pointallism!!
Project Notes:
• We’ll print the page on a colored paper to get you started (this is referred to as a "colored
ground" in art).
• Markers or crayons can easily be used in this exercise. The wax in the crayons can add a bit of
texture and you can go back over it later with watercolors for a cool effect. Pens, colored
pencils, and paint are still fine if that's what you have.
• Start with the lighter colors first and then move to the darker colors
• Spread out...leave space between your "dots" to give yourself room to add and combine other
colors
• Don't forget, make sure you use just the points or tips... Really try NOT to make the typical long
strokes.
• It is okay if your colors bleed or blend together. That is kind of the point behind pointallism.
• Yes, it will sound like a group of woodpeckers is in the room. And yes, your hand will get
tired...just keep going.
• Unless you have an especially long time to work on your piece, you will most likely not be able
to finish in one sitting. That's okay.
• The objective is to familiarize yourself with Seurat, Pointallism, and "appreciate" the amount of
detail that goes into this technique.
• Relax. Have fun and enjoy!
