2. Laterite Soil
• The word Laterite is derived from Latin word ‘later’ which
means ‘brick’. They are mainly tropical based reason’s soil where
we have heavy seasonal rainfall and high temperature. Because of
that, it promotes leaching of the soil. Due to rain, lime and silica
are always leached away. Laterite soils are said to farraginous
aluminous rock.
3. Location
• In India, laterite soil is
widespread, covering over
10% of the total geographical
area, namely on the summits
of the Western Ghats, Eastern
Ghats (Rajamahal Hills,
Vindhyas, Satpuras, and
Malwa Plateau), southern
parts of Maharashtra, parts
of Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh, West Bengal Orissa,
Jharkhand, Kerala, Assam.
4. Temperature
• The crop thrives in a range of
temperature between 14°C and
36°C. It can also withstand very low
minimum temperatures (4°C) as found
in winter in India's West Bengal state.
The crop requires very high rainfall
ranging from 300 to 450 cm per
annum.
5. Suitable
Plants
• Laterite soils lack fertility
due to intensive leaching.
When manured and
irrigated, some laterites are
suitable for growing
plantation crops like tea,
coffee, rubber, cinchona,
coconut, arecanut, etc. In
some areas, these soils
support grazing grounds
and scrub forests.
6. RED &
YELLOW SOIL
• Red soil is a type of soil that develops in a warm, temperate, moist climate
under deciduous or mixed forest, having thin organic and organic-mineral
layers black brown leached layer resting on an illuvium red layer. Red soils are
generally derived from the weathering of ancient crystalline and metamorphic
rock.
• Yellow Soil; a soil formed under broad-leaved forests in humid subtropical
regions, chiefly on parent material from clayey shales. It has an acid reaction
and low humus content, and its yellow color is caused by the presence of ferric
hydroxide. The total thickness of the soil horizons is 30-70 cm.
7. Location
• These soils are found in
the large tracts of
Western Tamil Nadu,
Karnataka, Southern
Maharashtra,
Chhattisgarh, Telangana,
Andhra Pradesh, Odisha
and Chhota Nagpur
plateau of Jharkhand.
8. Suitable Climate
• Under Wet tropical Climate the laterite
soils develop. The laterite soil is formed
under conditions of high temperature
and heavy rainfall with alternate wet
and dry periods, which leads to leaching
of soil, leaving only oxides of iron and
aluminum.
• The 55, 60, 65 and 70°F indicate
areas with significantly earlier planting
dates in the most recent decade (red)
due to warmer soil temperatures.
9. Crops to
Grow
• Growable plants on Red
and Yellow soil includes of
crops like rice, wheat,
sugarcane, millet,
groundnut, ragi and
potato.
