Life’s influences MOVIE: COACH CARTER “ Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” http://blogs.trb.com/community/news/davie/forum/2009/02/
Life’s influences MOVIE: COACH CARTER For me: This movie yearns me to do more each and every day. Realizing the human potential, and being able to control it in order to serve others, this brings me life. http://blogs.trb.com/community/news/davie/forum/2009/02/
Life’s influences MOVIE: The Guardian “ So others may live” - My career path as a doctor-for-others http://www.impawards.com/2006/guardian_ver2.html
The 20 year journey is worth it… Here and Now 25 yrs old Medical clerk Still a dreamer Idealistic End in Mind 45 years old Happily married Kids studying in Ateneo/Miriam Neurosurgeon NeuroCenter owner ASMPH professor Medical/surgical missions advocate
Applying the 4 P’s Product Great service Successful neurosurgeries/giving the best treatment possible Very good patient rapport, making the patient feel important Promotion Through word-of-mouth through my patients Having more avenues for exposure – giving lectures and talks to peers, further training abroad, being part of many group practices
Applying the 4 P’s Price According to the neurosurgical society’s recommendations Giving the patients fair prices and at par to what they can only afford Place Having a private practice in The Medical City Practicing in a government/charity institution Doing pro-bono work in the provinces/surgical missions
The measures of success… Increase in patient volume When the NeuroCenter/group practice has been established When patients regards me as a good physician not just for my clinical acumen but also how I deal with them When my students learn and apply what I teach Being financially stable (at least P10 million in the bank) Kids studying in private schools (Ateneo, Miriam)
My Conclusion & Subtitle: MASTERY for myself and for others… The path to MASTERY is long and hard. Constant learning and re-learning is needed. Self-MASTERY entails always looking within and knowing myself day by day. It is in this that I may then be able to serve others. In line with this, MASTERY of the human BRAIN, its functions, its anatomy, and its relation to how people are, is essential to becoming a neurosurgeon-for-others.
