Gears are used to transmit torque and change the speed and direction of rotation between a driving shaft and driven shaft. They can increase or decrease velocity and reverse direction. The number of teeth on each gear and their rotational speeds are related by a formula. Large enclosed gearboxes use oil pumps for lubrication, while smaller exposed gears can be lubricated with oil or grease by hand.
