Laurie Baker was an Indian architect who worked in India for over 60 years designing over 1,000 houses as well as schools, churches, and other buildings. His architecture respected the local climate and environment, using traditional materials and construction methods adapted for modern uses. Some of his notable projects included the P.K. Panikar House, Corpus Christi School, and a fishermen's village in Poonthura. Baker believed architecture should be responsive to local needs and reject transplanted "international styles" in favor of designs informed by vernacular patterns and styles of living.
