WELCOME
In 2017 we are celebrating 300 years since the birth of
David Garrick, with a programme of work which this celebrated
theatre innovator and actor would be proud to
produce himself.
Our Youth Theatre production is Cymbeline – one of the last of
Shakespeare’s plays in which Garrick appeared and, in keeping with our
namesake’s innovative spirit, our young players will be performing a
new version by Emma Rice.
But that’s not all; we have some amazing dramas this season – classic Jane
Austen brought to the stage in Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds production
of Northanger Abbey, funny and original play, Invincible and back by popular
demand, Oddsocks’ comedic take on Romeo and Juliet. Music lovers prepare
for a bumper season, whether you’re into 70s and 80s pop stars
Elkie Brooks or Barbara Dickson, the Sound of Glenn Miller Era big band,
our local theatre companies’ musicals or our new classical strand, including
a superb historically performed concert featuring Jane Booth performing
Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and direct from the West End, The Opera Boys.
Beat the winter gloom, with our fantastic line-up of comedy; ever popular
Comedy 42 brings rising stars of the comedy circuit, whilst we are joined by Jim
Davidson for two nights in February and local favourite Sheila McMahon in April.
Looking for a family show? How about Don’t Dribble on the Dragon in

birth of David Garrick, one of the
most remarkable sons of the theatrical
world who lived his formative years
in Lichfield.
It was here that he first ventured onto the
stage and encountered the works of
Shakespeare under the tuition of his
then teacher, Samuel Johnson. As part
of this anniversary we are delighted to
celebrate the life of David Garrick with this
exciting programme of events and activities.
As part of the GARRICK300 celebrations we hope to
install an 8ft sculpture of David Garrick’s face on the
outer wall of the theatre.

David Garrick was an English actor,
playwright, theatre manager and producer
who influenced nearly all aspects of
theatrical practice throughout the 18th
century, he was a true innovator and
risk taker.
PLAYWRITING
COMPETITION

As part of the GARRICK300 celebrations we are
launching a new playwriting competition to inspire the
next generation of David Garricks.
We are looking for an original, unperformed and
unproduced piece of work. It must not have received
a professional production in any form, anywhere
in the world, apart from an absolute maximum of
three rehearsed/staged readings or workshops only.
Amateur productions do not apply. Any scripts that
have been professionally produced or published will
be automatically disqualified.
The play must have a running time of no longer
than 45 minutes. The theme and inspiration for the
play is: Risk & Innovation.
The winning play will receive a day’s rehearsal with a
director and four actors, plus a rehearsed reading on
Friday 14th July in our Studio Theatre as part of the
Lichfield Festival 2017. The play may be developed
further at the Lichfield Garrick.

NORTHANGER ABBEY
Tim Luscombe’s adaptation of Northanger Abbey is
an absolute delight: witty, fast moving and stylish.
Catherine Morland loves a good novel and the more
‘horrid’ it is the better. At 17, she’s taken by her aunt
to Bath where she encounters the social whirl denied
her at home and befriends Isabella Thorpe and her
boorish brother, John. She also meets the charming
but eccentric Henry Tilney with his sister Eleanor and
works hard to get to know them better. However, John
Thorpe has other plans and is determined to have
Catherine for himself.
Following a string of deceptions, Catherine finally sees
through his tricks and lies. When she is invited by
her beloved Henry to his home, Northanger Abbey,
fact and fiction collide fuelled by the horror of the
Gothic fantasy The Mysteries of Udolpho and her
wild imagination gets the better of her judgement.
However, all misunderstandings are eventually
resolved and, as in all the best Jane Austen novels,
the young heroine finally gets her man…

no one wants to play! Mixed into this recipe of food,
puppets and music is the story of Little Red Hen and

This show is for you.
Join us on a special tour deep into the heart of
Volcano Industries where you can explore top-secret
research laboratories and meet cutting edge scientists
struggling with some unusual and extremely tricky
problems. They need your help but beware, there may
be unexpected dangers...
This brand new interactive show, created by
award-winning theatre-maker, Sarah Punshon, is
inspired by the latest educational neuroscience into
how amazing and utterly rubbish our brains can
be at maths, and how we can best grow our grey
matter. Join our brave and ridiculous heroes on their
voyage of discovery and together we’ll struggle with
ludicrously difficult tasks, get horribly stuck and risk
total failure. It’ll be fun.

Cymbeline is a King. Imogen, his only daughter, has
married against his wishes and he has banished her
new husband, Postumus, from Court. Cymbeline’s
second wife is simply wicked, as is her son Cloten
who wishes that he had married Imogen. To
complicate things further, Cymbeline had two sons
who were kidnapped at birth. Never has confusion
been so pleasurable and surprising!
A wild, giddy and immersive production full of
misunderstandings, intimacies, betrayals and battles
with heart-stopping poetry, electrifying live music and
characteristic madness. With many twists and turns,
this promises to be a white-knuckle ride.

The Clarinet Quintet by Mozart
is instantly recognizable as one
of the composer’s finest works.
In this performance, period
instrument specialist, Jane
Booth, joins Ensemble DeNote
playing a basset clarinet similar
to the instrument used in the
first performance in 1789.
Crusell, a contemporary of Mozart, was an early
clarinet virtuoso whose works for this instrument
are full of drama and lyricism, showcasing the
instrument’s virtuosity and versatility.

The A38 and A5 link at Lichfield and provide access to the
Midlands motorway network: M42, M50, M40, M5, M6,
M6 Toll and the M1.
PARKING
Parking is available in the Birmingham Road multi-storey car
park, directly behind the Lichfield Garrick. Prices start from
£1.00 per hour and it’s free to park after 6.30pm. Please use
postcode WS13 6HP for satellite navigation.
Other car parks are located across the city centre.

performance days.

Please remember to state how many tickets you require and
for which performance and include £1 for postage. Please
include a telephone number as tickets are subject
to availability.
Exchange/Refund Policy
We only offer refunds in exceptional circumstances and by
arrangement with the Box Office Manager. If you are unable
to attend a performance that is fully booked and has a
waiting list we may offer to re-sell your ticket for a nominal
fee of £1 per ticket. We operate a ticket exchange service
up to 48 hours prior to the performance and subject to
availability, for a fee of £1 per ticket (excludes Friends of
the Lichfield Garrick).

ACCESSIBILITY
01. Tickets may not be exchanged or refunded once purchased.
02. Smoking in all areas of the Lichfield Garrick is strictly forbidden.
03. Only food and drink purchased on the premises may be
consumed in the building.
04. Mobile telephones and digital watch alarms must be switched
off in the auditorium at all times. The use of camera or
recording equipment is strictly forbidden.
05. In the interests of other patrons, babes in arms are not usually
admitted. Exceptions may be made for pantomime and certain
children’s performances, when prior arrangements should be
made with the Box Office.
06. Due to Fire Regulations, all patrons, including babes in arms,
must be in possession of a valid ticket before entering the
auditorium. Tickets must be purchased, irrespective of the age
of the child.
07. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission of the
ticket holder to the premises. The Management reserves the
right to request the ticket holder to leave the premises and to
take any appropriate action to enforce such a request.
08. Latecomers will not be admitted until after the interval, or until
a suitable break in the performance. Latecomers, if admitted,
may be required to occupy alternative seats. Strictly no late
admittance to Studio performances.
09. The Management may alter or vary the programme, artistes
and timings without consultation or compensation.
10. If the performance is cancelled for reasons beyond the control
of the Management, the Lichfield Garrick will not be liable for
compensation whatsoever, other than a possible percentage
or maximum refund of the value of the ticket to the ticket
holder.
11. In the event of an evacuation of the theatre, Patrons are
asked to leave the building by the nearest fire exit and wait
on the grassed area by the Multi-Storey Car Park until further
instructions are given. Every attempt will be made to resume
the performance as soon as possible. Cancellation would be
highly unlikely.
12. Information and prices in this brochure were correct at the time
of going to press, please check details when booking your
tickets. Unforeseen circumstances may result in changes to
the published programme and artists. Show timings, if given,
are for guidance only and may vary in performance.
13. If there is a seating issue please report this to the
Duty Manager during your visit.

Wheelchair spaces are available and should be reserved
with the Box Office when booking tickets so we can ensure
all seating requirements are met. For professional shows an
accompanying escort may also be brought if assistance is
required, charged at 50% of an adult ticket price.
There is lift access within the building and ramped access to
the Green Room as well as adapted toilets.
Seeing and hearing dogs are welcome, please inform the
box office to ensure seating is appropriate.
Both theatres are equipped with an Infra-red system to
assist the hearing and impaired. Receivers can be reserved
from the Box Office for use with or without hearing aids.
