2. The Beginning
The typeface Garamond was first created by Claude Garamond in
the late 1500’s as part of a commission from French King Francis
I for a series of books.
The typeface was revived a few times after Garamond’s passing.
In 1988, Robert Slimbach had chosen to design the typeface
Adobe Garamond for the company Adobe Systems. He studied
the original designs of the creator for this revival of the typeface.
3. The Designer
Slimbach was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1956. After college
he developed an interest in graphic design and typefaces while
running a small screen printshop for manufacturing posters
and greeting cards.
He was self employed for two years until he started work for
Adobe Systems in 1987.
Since then, he has focused primarily on typefaces for digital
technology. In some cases, gathering inspiration from classical
sources and possibly the original sources if a typeface is a
reintroduction.
4. The Purpose
Adobe Garamond is considered a typeface that is clean, precise,
and very professional looking.
It’s commonly used for books and project designs due to the
typeface being considered very easy to read.
Adobe Garamond is also considered very Eco friendly since the
design of the letters requires less ink to print than other similar
typefaces.
