The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago located 972 km off the coast of Ecuador consisting of 13 large volcanic islands and smaller islands and islets. Administratively, the islands are a province of Ecuador whose capital is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The Galapagos Islands are famous for their numerous endemic species and Charles Darwin's studies that led to his theory of evolution by natural selection. Tourists call them the "Enchanted Islands" because the unique flora and fauna cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
