2. Explore local online publications on the
handout and read
--writers’ guidelines
--deadline for submission
--who is the editor?
8
Five steps to publishing locally (2)
3. Envision—where exactly will the story go?
Look at the number of words, and the
style. Write for that space.
4. Email an editor a query/pitch if you don’t
have the entire story written.
5. Submit and be patient, but check back.
9

Editor's Notes

  1. For 2008 Add? About 35 percent of the nation’s 18 to 24 year olds attend college, placing the U.S. fourth internationally and earning a B in participation, the report said. Yet only 17 out of every 100 college students ultimately receive a degree or certificate, placing the U.S. behind at least 14 other countries, including Japan (the international leader), Portugal, Ireland, and Iceland. Recap from College night at the library Don’t FORGET! Get a sense for where they are in the process Standup and strtch break after 1 hour Read before and after Tell them how I work with kids don’t write, just listen “Compose with utter freedom and edit with utter discipline.” — Erica Jong http://www.wordcrafts.com/ Training the coach at Girls Group Sequence: Review slides from last session 10 min discuss characteristics of a positive essay from slides, review handout of 3 good essays 10 min give out handout, discuss 20 min distribute copies of essays—read them 10 min role model essay coaching technique and teach nonjudgmental feedback Add to spielWe validate, motivate and educate When talk about quiet ing th editor on slide one—besides the feare and the editor, writing, actually involves different skills. There is a looseness at the beginning, let it out, make a mess, like making dinner when you chop up the veggies and the kitchen counter is a disaster. Then, there is the part where there is creativity and your cooking—everything gets mixed, and you add spices till its just right—an color here, a book title there. Then, you dish it out, not like you’re home, plop, into the plate, but like it’s going into the fanciest restaurant plates. You’re neat. You make sure everything is just right. Now you’re the editor, and your as tight and strict as you were loose when you started the process. Then you press “send” and hopefully someone finds that your essay is so appealing from the sniff of the first sentence to a satisfying last crunchy bite that they gulp it down and savor the experience. Remembering it. Ad to patter more specific, more human qualities Add a slide on creative nonfiction.—when writing the story. Also talk about the mystery here of writing—creativity is dfferent for everyone, everyone’s exact process is different. Notice yours. I’ll suggest some that work. As a writer, I try to pay attention to my process. Creative nonfiction writers tell stories, utilizing dialogue, description, characterization, point of view, while at the same time remaining true to the facts. Page xi The Best Creative Nonfiction Vol. 1 Character in fiction is defined, basically in five ways: By what a person says or thinks, by the dialogue that person has with other characters; by what a person does; by what others say about that person; and by the physical description of that person. From Using the Techniques of Fiction to Make Your Creative Nonfiction Even More Creative: Character, Setting, and Drama by Richard Goodman Writer’s Chronical October November 2007 Add slide: I am confident I smile at people I smile at people when I pass them in the hallways I smile at people when I pass them in the hallways. Sometimes they even smile back, and I wonder, “will we become friends?” Because that’s how it starts. Patter—the last is a cence. Smiling is easy, so easy you a baby can do it, so you might think, why mention it. Well, for this student, it said who she was. She wrote about how she had become more outgoing as a product of performing poettry. Getting to know people was important to her. She wanted to be a psychologist. She was happy person, positive. Spiel at beginning (in my spiel at goals and organization in writing folder) Founder of Essay Coaching, we help students bring out their best on their college essays. Remembering it. Ad to patter more specific, more human qualities unique voice so they can become alive on paper, and bring out their best. We will not do any writing. A bit about me, I’m a professional writer, a teacher, with a social work degree, and I’m a columnnist of rot he AA Biz review. These 10 secrets aren’t just about the college essay, you’ll be writing all through college, and forever, writing skills can pay off professionally, and can pay off with cash. One student I worked with received a 60,000 scholarship with a an acceptance letter from a director of admissions who complimented her on hr essay. Lt’s get started and talk about what people say about essays Also, Goal of the talk—How to get started, how to write a great essay, how to know ehn you’re finished What can parents do -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At 826—after secret 7, wrote lists and discusses them—what was unique, what was interesting. Also read before and after when discussed good beginning sentence. Add purpose of beginning, middle and end of essay {When writing your essay, you should follow a three-part format: the introduction, which includes an engaging lead; the body, which contains the central idea; and a conclusion, which sums up and expands on the main or central idea of the essay. } from http://www.kaptest.com/oneoff/essay/sample.jhtml Add idea that writing itself stirs up ideas…can write by thinking, can also write by writeing—one pushes word out from brain past editor at elbow, the otherpulls them from brain with hand as the “on” switch Either way, importance it to : quiet the editor, don’t say you can’t write as a reason to not write Make more one page handouts: Differences and similarities with essay and SAT essay Q and A Make four pager with 10 secrets, ideas for parents, deb from sw mgagzine, and stduetns got into page Look in folder for next year Handout: Page 1: 10 points Page 2: references (Q and A on my website) Page 3 letter or q and a Page 4 colleges and testimonials 3 good essays Don’t give slides as handout. Why the college essay is an opportunity that is handed to you on a silver platter The shape, size, color, texture, and sound of a compelling college essay What a college admissions officer does with your essay The Four Steps to a College Essay What to do when you don’t know how to get started How to pick a topic How to write with less stress How to make sure your essay is ready to send off Use your support team Possible slides to add: Annotated bibliography—also add to website Long list o qualities that you might want to emphasize (from books) Five letters you’d like to write to a writer, articist, politician, or local or public figure to give the feedback or influence them One or two people you’d pick to play you in the movies (as a teenager or as the person you think you’ll be when you’re an adult) Five reasons your friends, teachers, and coaches respect and value your presense. Add: Signup seeht for particpant with these columns School name of parent name of student grade email address Introduce myself—Professional writer for ovr 20 years—I’m a frequent contributor to the Ann arbor Observer, taught engoish on a college level,, and I also consider myself a counselor, I have an MSW from UM. Parent of two girls, one graduated college, one is isn college Some of the techniquesq I feel very strongly about, because they’ve helped my writing personally. I’m going to tell you characteristics of a good college essay—what does it look like, and how can you get there…what is the process But first, a few quotes to get you thinking about what it is like to be an essay writer
  2. When I work with students in the workshops, I try to put them in the place of the college admissions officer. In some ways this is like applying for a job—you want to impress the person who is interviewing you, and hopefully have some clear idea about why you want to work for them as opposed to anyone else. When it comes to applying to school, it’s the same idea…it’s helpful to be clear about why you want to go there…so that the admissions officer can also visualize you attending this schhol.. That you’ll fit in with the others. Just like you want the school to be a good fit for you, the school wants to pick students who are a good fit for them. And this piece of paper you write is the only thing that can speak direcly to both of those needs.
  3. For 2008 Add? About 35 percent of the nation’s 18 to 24 year olds attend college, placing the U.S. fourth internationally and earning a B in participation, the report said.
