Editor's Notes
For 2008
Add?
About 35 percent of the nation’s 18 to 24 year olds attend college, placing the U.S. fourth internationally and earning a B in participation, the report said. Yet only 17 out of every 100 college students ultimately receive a degree or certificate, placing the U.S. behind at least 14 other countries, including Japan (the international leader), Portugal, Ireland, and Iceland.

When talk about quiet ing th editor on slide one—besides the feare and the editor, writing, actually involves different skills. There is a looseness at the beginning, let it out, make a mess, like making dinner when you chop up the veggies and the kitchen counter is a disaster. Then, there is the part where there is creativity and your cooking—everything gets mixed, and you add spices till its just right—an color here, a book title there. Then, you dish it out, not like you’re home, plop, into the plate, but like it’s going into the fanciest restaurant plates. You’re neat. You make sure everything is just right. Now you’re the editor, and your as tight and strict as you were loose when you started the process. Then you press “send” and hopefully someone finds that your essay is so appealing from the sniff of the first sentence to a satisfying last crunchy bite that they gulp it down and savor the experience. Remembering it.
Ad to patter more specific, more human qualities
Add a slide on creative nonfiction.—when writing the story. Also talk about the mystery here of writing—creativity is dfferent for everyone, everyone’s exact process is different. Notice yours. I’ll suggest some that work. As a writer, I try to pay attention to my process.
Creative nonfiction writers tell stories, utilizing dialogue, description, characterization, point of view, while at the same time remaining true to the facts. Page xi The Best Creative Nonfiction Vol. 1
Character in fiction is defined, basically in five ways: By what a person says or thinks, by the dialogue that person has with other characters; by what a person does; by what others say about that person; and by the physical description of that person. I smile at people when I pass them in the hallways. Sometimes they even smile back, and I wonder, “will we become friends?” Because that’s how it starts.
Patter—the last is a cence. Smiling is easy, so easy you a baby can do it, so you might think, why mention it. Well, for this student, it said who she was. She wrote about how she had become more outgoing as a product of performing poettry. Getting to know people was important to her. She wanted to be a psychologist. She was happy person, positive.

Introduce myself—Professional writer for ovr 20 years—I’m a frequent contributor to the Ann arbor Observer, taught engoish on a college level,, and I also consider myself a counselor, I have an MSW from UM. I’m going to tell you characteristics of a good college essay—what does it look like, and how can you get there…what is the process
But first, a few quotes to get you thinking about what it is like to be an essay writer
When I work with students in the workshops, I try to put them in the place of the college admissions officer. In some ways this is like applying for a job—you want to impress the person who is interviewing you, and hopefully have some clear idea about why you want to work for them as opposed to anyone else. When it comes to applying to school, it’s the same idea…it’s helpful to be clear about why you want to go there…so that the admissions officer can also visualize you attending this schhol.. That you’ll fit in with the others. Just like you want the school to be a good fit for you, the school wants to pick students who are a good fit for them. And this piece of paper you write is the only thing that can speak direcly to both of those needs.
