3. INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH
PAPERS
• Research papers are all about being very particular and
thorough in writing and presenting your work. Phrases like
very good, light weight, low cost, very efficient can only be
used when qualified/supported by your work.
• Some element of novelty is always required in original
research papers
• Novelty is different mathematical or experimental approach, or
better, faster or more efficient results
• In experimental work, very little novelty is good enough
• For analytical/simulation based research, significant novelty is required

4. INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH
PAPERS
• Research papers are not about solving y=mx+c and finding m
and c values; instead these are analysis, solution strategies,
limitations, discussions and future recommendations for
research for various scenarios, value ranges, and
situations/signs of m,c,y,x.
• Lot of graphs, figures, tables are expected
• You always have to search for elements of extensive data
recording and novelty – particular contribution to the
academic/research community

balloon experiment

5. HOW TO READ PAPERS
Multiple times; number of reading passes depend on how relevant
you feel the paper is to your research
• Pass 1: Read title and abstract – if you understand 25% or more
of it you are good for now
• Pass 2: Read title, abstract and all figures/tables/graphs along
with their captions. In most cases, this is the maximum level of
understanding you need for your research.
• Pass 3: Read whole paper (if you understand around 50% you are
good)
• You generally cannot understand more than 75% of the paper
even after these three passes
