and round of 16, we said goodbye to 6
host cities. Curitiba, Cuiabá, Manaus
and Natal finished their jobs after the
groups and Porto Alegre and Recife af-
ter Tuesday’s match.
We asked some of the Interns from
these cities that had already done their
jobs to tell us about their experience
and it’s unanimous, we want it to last
forever. Actually, the person who is wri-
ting this article is really sad with the
end of the internship in HBS.
However, this is not our last newsletter!
You will need to read us one more time
next week, but I can anticipate that it’s
been a pleasure and we all are going
to miss this!
Let’s check out some amazing feedback!
EDIÇÃO #13 – 04 JULHO 2014
Dear HBS Interns,
Here we go… we have reached
the Quarter Finals and the
World Cup is becoming very
exciting now. There are eight
teams left all competing to be-
come the best football team in
the world.
In today’s newsletter we look at
our Booking Department. Mar-
co Astolfi, the Senior Manager
of the Booking Back Office ex-
plains how the Booking De-
partment works. It is thanks to
this department that the ve-
nues know what the Media
Rights Licensees have booked
and what they plan to do at
each venue.
We look at some feedback le-
tters from the students who
have already completed their
internships.
A few days ago, our IBC Interns
were given the opportunity to
have a tour of Maracana, giving
them the opportunity to see all
the broadcast areas set up at
each venue too.
Good Luck for your final
matches!
Yours sincerely,
Tania

INTERN FEEDBACK - COMMENTARY TEAM
Guilherme Oviedo—Curitiba.
Hello ! My name is Guilherme Oviedo and I have worked as a Commentary Assistant.
This experience was one of the best times of my life… both in professional life, due to
the fact of participating in one of the biggest events of the world, as in a personal life,
because I am really a sports fan. I have gone to work everyday with a big desire and
pride to be there being a participant.
The World Cup at Curitiba has just finished and I’m already missing it!
Thanks for the opportunity!
Sissa Gabrielli Maricaua—Manaus
My name is Sissa Gabrielli Maricaua, and I have been an Intern as CCR Assistant
(Commentary Control Room) in Manaus. I can say that it was, until now, the most exciting
experience of my life. I knew from the beginning that it would be striking and memorable,
but I had no idea it would be like this.
Our CCR became a family in a few days. We learned how to work as a team and help each
other. There was a sense of protection and friendship really strong, not only among us in-
terns, but also with our heads and people who worked with us in CCR: Murray Hogan,
Momcilo Obradovic, Willy Boehm and Stefan Ebert. We knew we were in excellent hands
under this command, and we are not disappointed. It was one of the best parts of this inter-
nship program. The ceremony of certificates had a feeling of graduation.
We knew that our time together was on borrowed time, but it was worth it.
I also knew it was not the mark of the end but a new beginning, the begin-
ning of a series of moments like that.
For me, it was much more than a simple internship, it was the way to find
me and finally figure out what I like to do. Nothing is more pleasurable to a
professional than wake up every day excited to go to work, willing to get up
early to start the day. The incentive of our supervisors was also very impor-
tant to build our confidence. And it was this experience at HBS that helped
me to found out I was doing the wrong course at university. Advised by my
own intern friends and supervisors, I decided to change and leave the engi-
neering to pursue degrees in Public Relations and International Relations. I
want more experiences like this. I have no words to thank everyone who
gave me the courage to change.
Finally, having the chance to not only watch but being part of this historic
event, it changed the way that I used to see my city, my country and myself.
Brazil has much potential and beauty, and we know that Manaus delighted
and surprised many people. At the World Cup in Manaus, the work was a
team, not just at HBS, but the volunteers, security guards, FIFA, the clea-
ning staff, TV, telephone and Internet technicians, the workmen, the kit-
chen personnel... This group created something beautiful, that will remain
forever in the history of our city. I'm sure the same teamwork is also the key
to build a better Brazil. Manaus’s CCR team

INTERN FEEDBACK - LOGISTICS
My name is Patrícia Machry and I worked as a Lo-
gistics Assistant in Porto Alegre. We started our job
at Beira-Rio Stadium in April, so when the World
Cup actually started, we were already used to the
environment and were in fact very good friends.
We had many things to do in PTA in a short time
period, and it was incredible to see that everyone
worked together and tried to help each other all
the time. It was simply amazing having the oppor-
tunity to be a part of this magnificent event and to
meet people from all over the world with the most
different and awesome life stories. We were very
lucky with our staff in PTA, everyone was very fri-
endly and took their jobs really seriously. This was
my first internship and I have learned a lot from it. I learned the importance of teamwork and that we always have to treat
people well and help them deal with their problems, because feeling good in your work environment makes it easier for
everyone to do a good job. It was amazing to witness everything working out well and receiving compliments from the fo-
reigners who came to town.
We've made some lifelong friends here, and I really hope I can have the opportunity to work with these people again someti-
me. We had some very nice moments together and I'm sure none of us will ever forget that. Our BVM always called us "The
Dream Team", and I couldn't agree more with him. I'll really miss this staff a lot!

Gustavo Buna—Rio de Janeiro
It’s the end of the first term of the World Cup and since I’ve been working with
HBS, the amount of knowledge we’ve been given is worthy for several weeks,
months or even years working with this team. We are 6 Information Assistants
and an FBST Assistant that are divided in three shifts, and our boss is an Austra-
lian with a British accent, Deborah Sewell. On our first day we had a Maracanã
tour, we met the Senior Broadcast Liaison Managers, Paul and Chris, and the
HBS team that works on the Broadcast Compound.
After that, it was action time. On Match Day -1, we organize all the SADs and
tickets. The SADs are the passes that every media receives on Match Day, be-
cause the accreditation is not enough. It is with the SADs that we know where
each MRL can go on the stadium. It’s a meticulous job, which requires big atten-
tion and is really tiring. Any mistake can cause a huge mess. We need to be sure that every ticket and SAD is going to be gi-
ven for the right venue on Match Day.
One of the most amazing things to do at the stadium is to
watch the game from the field. Being a “Shadow”, means you
need to help and follow someone from HBS during the
matches. When we do that, two of us stand behind the goals,
one in each, one of us stands in the presentation platform,
making sure if the MRLs are fulfilling their estimate time to do
their broadcasting, and last but not least, one of us stands
with the cameras that are supposed to shoot the audience.
Being a part of this moment is worth every sacrifice. Although
I’m not a football lover, it’s impossible to not have chills over
my body during the team’s national anthem. It’s breath ta-
king.
This job is really an exchange programme where we don’t
need to catch a plane, maybe just the subway.”

HBS CORETEAM - BOOKING OFFICE
Marco Astolfi is Senior Manager, Booking Back Office.
He’s Italian and speaks his natural language, English
and French. He did the World Cup in 2002 – Korea and
Japan, 2006 – Germany , 2010 – South Africa and now,
2014 — Brazil.
What is Booking?
Booking is the department where MRLs book services that
allow them to personalize the transmission of the World
Cup. At HBS, we produce the multilateral signal, which is the
production of images of the World Cup available to all the
rights holders. TV channels and radios that have rights for
the World Cup can personalize the transmission of the event.
For example, a TV channel can add their own cameras on the
field, they can book interviews at the venue, they have space
here in the IBC and radios also have similar services. So, the
main mission of Booking is to provide and collect the reques-
ted services to MRLs.
My responsibility as Manager of the Back Office is to transla-
te the commercial requests from the MRLs into technical
instructions for the venues. I have a team here of about 12
people and we provide instructions about which services
need to be delivered to the MRLs at the venues.
The difference between Front and Back Office
The Front Office is the other half of Booking; they collect the
request from MRLs. The MRLs come to the Front Desk coun-
ter to talk to the coordinators. They have been talking to co-
ordinators for months, even years, because we started the
preparation of the World Cup almost 2 years ago. So we ha-
ve coordinators from the Front Office that started to work
with us in 2013 and they have been exchanging information
with MRLs since before the Confederations Cup and we have
been collecting all the requests. We have processed these
requests and we started to deliver the services in May, du-
ring the IBC construction, and now we are delivering before
each match.
Booking’s Next Step
Since the Final Draw we have known where each team would
play in the group matches and the broadcasters prepared
their operations accordingly. Now they don’t’ know where
their team will play until the result of the game. How does
Booking prepare for this?
We are prepared for this. We have an internal software, we
have procedures, this is the not the first time that we are
doing the World Cup, we have done several World Cups, so
we are able to prepare the procedures. In December after
the Final Draw we collected all the requests from the MRLs
for the first 48 matches and these requests have been pro-
cessed from January and we sent the confirmation to the
MRLs in February. Now each time there is a new phase star-
ting, the MRLs are doing there bookings more or less three
days before each match, so we are now processing the boo-
kings in three days, instead of 2 months. This is more or less
the time difference between the two phases.
Different cultures and languages
The interesting thing that we have is that we are working
with MRLs from all around the world, there is of course a
need to understand television operations, but also you need
to be able to face cultural differences. We deal with Europe-
ans, Americans, South Americans, Asians and Australians,
definitely people from all over the world. It’s a challenge to
have this done, sometimes it’s difficult to understand the
needs of everyone, but it is part of our job.
Today, being able to speak several languages is very impor-
tant, at least two! I hope each intern is able to find their own
interests in this big machine.

BOOKING OFFICE - INTERNS
Andrey and Daniel
Booking Office — Interns’ View
The Booking Office is the principal way of contact between
MRLs and HBS services. At the IBC, there is the Booking
Front Office (which deals directly with the MRLs) and the
Back Office (which deals with the operational part in ve-
nues). The Interns’ main activity is to review the reports pro-
duced about camera locations, places of interview inside the
venues and all services available in the venues for MRLs.
Every day around 18:00, Booking sends reports to venues
about MRL access and they check if everything is right for
the next days of work. The reports are guidelines that show
each MRL position inside the venue, showing who should
get what equipment, what time and all necessary informa-
tion.
We talked to Andrey and Daniel, our Booking Interns and
they told us a little bit about what they are thinking about
the job! Check it out!
Management Student , Andrey
“It's been a really cool experience. I'm an athlete and when I
saw the ad in PUC, saying that HBS would provide an inter-
nship to work at the World Cup I thought I had to be a part
of it. At first I didn’t quite understand what it was, and I di-
dn’t know at the time what was happening behind the World
Cup, how many people were involved working on broadcas-
ting. It’s a very new thing for me and I see a chance to work
with this in the future. What attracted me most to the inter-
nship, besides loving sports, was the intercultural experience
that it’s hard to find in Brazil. I work with people from Fran-
ce, Germany... In my case, I speak German, but I never had
the opportunity to practice it and now, in addition to English
I speak a little bit of German! You get in touch with different
cultures and languages. That is the main difference!”
Arts Student, Daniel
“I'm really enjoying the internship! Marco introduced the IBC
Halls to me and Andrey and it was amazing! I could see how
broadcasting really works. What I like most is that I can see
how the administration part works, I didn’t have knowledge
of this before. It’s being a super different experience because
of my course. It‘s very challenging, this internship looks like
I’m doing an Exchange programme! We work six hours per
day and for about two months only communicating in En-
glish and furthermore we’re having contact with different
languages and cultures, such as German, Italian, Swiss,
French, Spanish, Portuguese ... Anyway, it's a huge cultural
diversity!

On Monday, June 30, HBS offered a tour of Maracanã to
the Interns! There were almost 60 interns joining Leticia,
Sylvia and Lidiane from the IBC.
When we arrived there, Ian Robertson (BVM) and his te-
am were waiting for us and divided us in two groups so
we could enjoy the tour more.
For the first part, he explained how the broadcast com-
pound works and showed us the main rooms where ima-
ges go before coming to the IBC. It’s really teamwork,
because to be aired as perfect as it is, the work is divi-
ded. The first room we visited, is where the director sits
and creates the multilateral production. The second one
is the slow motion room; slow motions are used mostly
on replays. At the same time, there is a team to work on-
ly on audio stuff, e.g. they control the field microphone
or if team A is trying to score, they turn team A’s crowd
volume up and vice versa.
Meanwhile, the TOC is making sure the signal is working
well and supporting the MRLs with their cameras. On the
broadcast compound we saw the BIO Office and OB vans
as well.
After that, we went to the stadium itself. We saw the
press conference room, Mixed Zone and then went to the
media tribune, where the MRLs commentators have their
places to comment the game and where mais HBS came-
ras are located.
Ian told us that for the final match the commentary posi-
tions are going to double it size, because it is one of the
principal games of the World Cup.
We were so delighted to go on a tour at Maracanã, be-
cause during the World Cup, tours for general public are
off. The last tour at Maracanã was for some fans and
journalists in May.
Of course, as good Brazilians we took lots of photos du-
ring the tour, so it’s time to check it out.
