Abstract of the Presentation: The challenges facing cities in the 21st century are greater than ever. A new focus is required to overcome the emerging social, technological, economic, environmental, and political forces exerting pressure on cities – one that looks at how to create cities that are sustainable – for citizens, for business and for the environment. Tackling this issue head on, Arcadis has developed a Vision 2030 plan that sees new platforms, capabilities and domains operating in cities – with citizens at its core. According to the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index 2018, “Sustainable cities can be thought of as places that are planned and managed with consideration for social, economic, environmental impact, providing a resilient habitat for existing populations, without compromising the ability of future generations to experience the same. Accordingly, measures of sustainability need to be able to measure current city performance, ability to mitigate future impacts as well as investment in future capability – ideally measured from the perspective of the citizen.” Data, and how we analyze it, is the game changer. Data provides the tools to plan, develop and construct cities in which citizens can thrive in harmony and order. Advanced analytics allows organizations to think differently, using data to uncover trends, insights and even unearth hidden problems. The results allow cities to plan for the future and budget more effectively, leading to stronger end results. Arcadis is working with organizations in cities across the globe, including New York, Manchester and San Francisco, to co-create solutions to their unique challenges and develop sustainable new models that will help them improve the quality of life for citizens today, and tomorrow. About the Author: Christoph currently serves as the Global Director Data Analytics & Insights at Arcadis, where he leads the company’s Analytics transformation. Before joining Arcadis in November 2017, Christoph had worked in Analytics, Infrastructure and Transportation for over 15 years. He started his career as an Analyst at Frankfurt Airport, before finishing his PhD in Transportation Economics at the University of Muenster in 2008. Christoph then began as a Postdoc and later became the Lab Executive Officer at MIT’s Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment in Cambridge, MA. After leaving academia in 2012, Christoph became Senior Lead data Scientist at Booz Allen Hamilton and led a team of Data Scientists in Boston, MA and Washington, DC. In 2016, Christoph joined McKinsey & Co in Berlin as an Advanced Analytics Expert. Christoph also serves as a Captain (res) in the German Air Force.

He is a well know smart city expert and has presented at several large international events including the Barcelona Smart City Expo, Smart to Future Cities in London and at the EU-China Smart City collaboration event in Beijing where he represented the City of Copenhagen. Peter also have more than 10 years of international consultant experience from the EU Commission, EU Parliament, OECD, Nordic Innovation Center and Danish government institutions. His expertise is in regional innovation systems, sector competitiveness studies and smart cities.

New mobility trends will have a profound impact not only in the way users move (or, we should say, how users access / consume mobility), but will transform how users interact with the different players in the mobility ecosystem – vehicles/automakers, service providers, insurance companies, …, and service stations. Implications are manifold: technical, business-related, legal. This presentation revolves around technical and business implications, discussing how the so-called Daimler's CASE paradigm - standing for vehicles becoming more and more Connected, Autonomous, allowing flexible use (Shared & Services) and having Electric drive systems - will have an impact on service stations, not to be considered merely “filling stations” anymore, but “mobility hubs” serving different mobility needs from conventional users - that is, drivers, or passengers -, and CAVs. Service stations will ultimately become a central node in an IoT-enabled mobility world, and the presentation will tackle how the digital tsunami enabling MaaS, blockchain and other cutting-edge technology developments will shape the future of this business.
