Editor's Notes

  • #3 The computer becomes your classroom, and that classroom is available 24/7. Usually there is no required meeting time, but rather a minimum number of access times. This means the classroom is more flexible and convenient, but that does not mean the course is easier. Learning online requires a degree of technological competence and student skills such as self-discipline.Typically a college class requires 2 hours of work for every hour of class time. In the online environment that is a minimum, and the time you spend will be totally involved with interaction.Schools use a Learning Management System, or LMS. At Northern New Mexico College, we use Blackboard, a commercial software intended to support fully online courses.Interaction online is usually Asynchronous, which means not at the same time. The discussion board is usually the focus of student interaction, where topics are divided into Forums. Here you post messages that form threads. Also, Assignments are given in Course Content areas, and Exams are also conducted.
  • #4 There are several requirements for being an online student. First is access a modern computer, which means one that runs Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, or Macintosh Operating System 10.5 or higher.Internet connection must be broadband (cable, dsl) or WIFI. If you do not have home access to a computer and/or connection with these capabilities, you need to find a way to access on either at school or some other place. You must be comfortable using a computer to access the World Wide Web, including searching and web browsing. As most interactions are text-based, you must possess adequate typing skills and be able to word process documents. Finally, as a student you should be have the self-discipline to log in regularly and devoted the time it takes to complete coursework. Because of the distance between you and the professor, you should be able to problem-solve and work independently. motivated and
  • #5 Instructions will come largely through printed materials, and you need to be able to read accurately for information.Be aware of how the instructor has structured communication. This could include synchronous office hours, or special help forumsAssignments are turned in online. Be sure you understand how to do this before the class gets underway. Also, exams are given online, and you will want to be comfortable with that format. Finally, get in the habit of monitoring your grades. In Blackboard all students have access to the Grade Book, which is updated every time a grade is assigned.
