First generation computer uses
Vacuum tubes, Magnetic tape drives
and magnetic core memories were
developed.
ENIAC (Electronic Numeric
Integrator And Calculator ) was the
first electronic digital computer.
It used around 18,000 vacuum tubes.
Its size was too much large. This was
very hard to read and write programs
by every person. The first generation
computer produces too much heat.
e.g. -
• Advantage
• Disadvantage
1. Vacuum tubes were used as electronic component
2. Electronic digital computers were developed
for the first time
3. These computer were the fastest
calculating devices of their time.
4. Computation were
performed in millisecond. 1. Too large in size
2. They are unreliable.
5. Induce a large amount of heat due to the vacuum
tubes.
3. Not portable.
4. Limited commercial use.
• Advantage
• Disadvantage
1. Smaller in size as compared to first generation.
6. Much more reliable.
5. Less heat generated.
2. Computer was performing in micro second.
3. Less hardware and maintenance problem.
4. Could be use for commercial use.
1. Air-conditioning required.
2. Frequent maintenance required.
4. Manual assembly of individual components into a
functioning unit was required.
3. Commercial production was difficult and costly.
• Advantage
• Disadvantage
1. Smaller in size as compared to second generation.
5. More reliable.
6. Portable .
2. Less electricity consumption.
4. Heat generation was rare.
3. General purpose computer.
1. Air conditioning was required in
many cases due to ICs.
2. Very advanced technology was
required to make the ICs.
• Advantage
• Disadvantage
4. Smaller in size and much reliable.
1. No cooling system required in many cases.
6. Portable and cheap
5. Much faster computation
2. The Heat generated was negligible.
3. Totally general purpose computer.
1. Very advanced technology was
required to fabricate to the
MICROPROCESSORS.
• Advantage
2. Artificial Intelligence Language developed.
1. These computers are more reliable,
works faster than other computers.
3. They are easily portable.
6. These computers are available in different sizes with
different features, with different affordable prices.
4. Having extra high processing speed.
5. Having capabilities of parallel processing.
