The IPEDS Method calculates the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) students based on fall enrollment headcounts, estimating part-time students by multiplying the part-time headcount by factors. This FTE total is used annually in the Digest of Education Statistics. Alternatively, the 1/3 Method estimates part-time students by multiplying the part-time headcount by 1/3, which is then added to the full-time enrollment headcount to calculate an overall FTE for fall students. Both methods can also be used to calculate FTE faculty numbers.
