NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS
The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion welcomes a variety of contributions
that focus on women’s experience or on gender as a category of analysis, and that further
feminist theory, consciousness, and practice. We are looking for material of several types
and formats: scholarly, critical, and constructive articles, review essays (reviews of recent
literature on a given topic), reports of significant feminist projects related to religion,
liturgies, poetry, letters, and ideas for roundtable discussions.
Manuscripts submitted should not be under consideration elsewhere. They should
be typewritten in Times New Roman font (including any non-Roman characters), double-
spaced, and around 7,500 words (including footnotes). No bibliography is necessary. A 150-
word abstract of the article must be included. Form should follow The Chicago Manual of
Style, 16th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010). In order to protect anonymity, no
identifying information should appear anywhere in the document, including footnotes. Please
see our website, http://www.fsrinc.org/jfsr/submissions, for additional submission guidelines.
We ask authors to transliterate foreign languages in the manuscript. If authors wish
to use a non-Unicode font and the article is accepted for publication, then authors will be
required to pay any extra fees associated with typesetting.
All papers appropriate for JFSR will be sent out anonymously to at least two
reviewers, on whose judgment the editors rely heavily. While JFSR is not restricted to
any one conception of feminism and seeks to represent the widest possible range of
feminist perspectives, it is feminist. Reviewers are asked to evaluate manuscripts and
creative pieces not only on the basis of their scholarly competence, but also on the basis
of their contribution to feminist theory, their acquaintance with significant issues in the
women’s movement, and their vision of social and/or religious change. Writing that is in
any way sexist, racist, homophobic, or otherwise discriminatory will not be accepted. All
manuscripts are subject to editorial modification.
Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza New Scholars Awards. These awards signal our
awareness of the need to encourage and give recognition to the emerging voices of new
scholars, whose research and insights will shape the future of feminist studies in religion.
The awards are tiered with the first-place winner receiving $1,000.00, the second-place
winner receiving $500.00, and the third-place winner receiving $250.00.
Participation in the New Scholars Award competition does not require an advanced
academic degree. However, authors cannot have taught at the college or university level
for more than three years at the time of submission. Previous award winners are not
eligible in subsequent years. To participate in this award competition, authors should
contact the Submissions Editor and confirm eligibility. Submissions will first enter the
standard anonymous review process. Once an article is accepted for publication, it will
be considered for the New Scholars Award. Submissions will be judged by a panel to
determine the winners. The winning manuscripts will appear in the JFSR.
All correspondence related to the submission of manuscripts should be sent to
Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, Attention: Susan Woolever, Submissions Editor,
Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, Drew University, 36 Madison Avenue, Madison
NJ 07940, USA, e-mail Journal@fsrinc.org. Please note: manuscripts should be submitted
via the online system at http://journal.fsrinc.org.
