• “Sometimes, effective teamwork
requires letting go of the control. It is
more important to have an environment
where everyone feels valued and able to
contribute their own ideas, rather than
making sure everything is 100% the way I
want it to be. People can surprise you if
you give them the chance to”.
• “… Depending on the teams, I switched
my roles. Sometimes, I was a leader,
assigning work to my partners and
fostering conversations. Sometimes, I was
a follower, rather listening and allowing
someone else to take lead. [. . .] Also, you
must be patient with our team and have
open communication to understand and
learn from your teammates”.
• “ … I also think it's good to have little
debates and not always be willing to just
say yes to every suggestion, [. . .] really get
the opinion of other people. [. . .] Always
doing it respectfully is key and you never
want to make somebody feel bad about
their ideas …”

“As I came in here, I heard those words,
" ." Well, when the
bough breaks, the cradle will fall. And it
has fallen here; it has fallen. Makers of
men; creators of leaders; be careful what
kind of leaders you're producing' here …
I'm not a judge or jury. But I can tell you
this: he won't sell anybody out to buy his
future!! And that, my friends, is called
! That's called ! Now
that's the stuff leaders should be made of
… Now here's Charlie. He's come to the
crossroads. He has chosen a path. It's the
right path. It's a path made of --
that leads to . Let him continue
on his journey …”

5. From Leadership to
Communityship:
Henry Mintzberg, 2006, 2009, & 2018
• “Effective organizations are communities of human beings, not
collections of human resources .”
• “How can you recognize Communityship in an organization? That’s
easy. You feel the energy in the place, the commitment of its people,
their collective interest in what they do”.
• “ … Sure, we need leadership, especially to establish a community in
new organizations and help sustain it in established organizations. What
we don’t need is an obsession with leadership—of some individual
singled out from the rest, as if he or she is the be-all and end-all of
organizing (and is paid accordingly) … ”

6. • Insights from the study “No Bridges
Burned: Nonprofit Organizations’
COVID-19 Response in Highly Diverse
Neighborhoods” (Hashemi et al.,
2023)
• “… no one can solve the crisis by
itself” (M2, 7:7).
• Shift in power dynamics: Networks
& bottom-up social process vs. top-
down leadership (e.g, Multicaf)
• “[C]risis management ought to be
considered ‘… not as a math
problem with humans but a
narrative of relationships that
extend over time …” (Branicki citing
Gilligan, 2020, p. 873).

Ideal Good
Team Players
Lencioni,
2016

“Humility isn't a sign of low self-esteem. It's a mark
of high self-awareness. The goal isn't to deny your
strengths. It's to see your strengths & shortcomings
accurately. The first rule of improvement: recognize
room for improvement. Narcissism feeds ego.
Humility fuels growth” (Grant, 2023, 12:41 p.m.).
