Fritz was born in Boppard,
Germany the youngest of
nine. His parents were
Richard Strassman, a
respected german court
clerk, and his mother was
Julie Bernsman – Strassman.
He was married
twice. First to
Maria Heckter in
1937, having one
son named Martin.
Then 3 years after
Maria's death in
1956 he married
Irmgard
Hartmann.
4. Education and Contributions
Fritz studied at the Technical University Hannover and
received his Ph.D. In 1929. In 1946 he joined the faculty at
the University of Mainz. He then directed the chemistry
department at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry
from 1945-53.
Contributions
Helped develop the method of Rubidium Strontium dating.
1934 joined Hanh and Meitner in investigation on radioactive
products when Uranium is bobarded by nuerons.
1938 Nuclear fission is discovered.
Established the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the Univeristy of Mainz.
