The hydroelectric power dam of Thisauros in Paranesti-Nestos river is the largest dam in the Balkan countries. It forms a large lake along the old estuary of the river Nestos for many kilometers. The dam provides shelter for endangered species and its reservoirs reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared to fossil fuels. However, it also submerges large areas of land, requiring relocation of people and producing methane emissions. The main purposes of the dam are irrigation and hydroelectric power production. Students visit it annually and some practice extreme sports, while deer, squirrels, birds and fish inhabit the nearby areas.
