AACR Press Release Early-Career Hill DayMario Pulido
The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) sent 15 early-career cancer scientists to Capitol Hill for their inaugural Early-career Hill Day. These scientists met with 36 congressional members and staff to discuss how early-career scientists have been disproportionately affected by stagnant funding from the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute over the past decade, making it harder to obtain grants and remain in research careers. The AACR is working to support early-career investigators and help secure continued funding growth through initiatives like new grants for young researchers.
Funding for research and career development through the Strategic Opportuniti...CTSI at UCSF
The SOS Funding Research program provides about $1 million per year to support research grants for UCSF faculty across all schools. It has helped increase overall research funding at UCSF to over $12.3 million total and 421 total awards. Statistics show that from 2001-2005, SOS awarded $5.5 million which subsequently helped recruit over $44 million in additional funding, mostly from government sources. Quotes from grant recipients indicate that SOS funding was critical for obtaining preliminary data and publications needed to achieve subsequent larger grants. SOS has also contributed to advances in standards of care, new policies, and medical technologies.
This document provides an overview of key elements of project management for relief operations, including assessment, analysis, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. It discusses tools and approaches for each stage, such as using the planning cycle and systems model for planning, logical frameworks for proposals and reporting, and tools for assessment such as surveys, interviews and gap analysis. Human resources challenges and approaches for analysis such as vulnerability/capacity analysis, gender analysis, and stakeholder analysis are also covered.

Writing grants for Global South partnerships, the differences and challenges ...Francois Stepman
26 October 2020. The aim of the Grant Writing Day 2020 was to provide PHD students at the University of Ghent/Belgium with information and support that will help them in their grant writing.
The last panel was about some of the peculiarities of funding for Global Challenges/University Development Cooperation/Capacity Building projects. It was aimed at professors or postdocs who want to apply for funding to financers such as VLIR-UOS, EuropeAid, EDCTP, Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, Erasmus+, etc.
Keynote speaker : Mr. Francois Stepman (co-organiser Platform for African – European Partnership in Agricultural Research for Development, PAEPARD
The document discusses the partnership between the Veterans Innovation Center (VIC) and Healthcare Institute for Neuro-Recovery Innovation Labs (HINRI) to improve services for veterans. VIC aims to better coordinate non-government organizations that assist veterans, while HINRI seeks to advance research and treatment for neurological injuries through collaboration between academia, medicine, and business. Their partnership would create a clinical trials platform to test new rehabilitation approaches and treatments based on translational research.
The document provides information on various fellowship and internship opportunities for professionals in government agencies, laboratories, and other organizations. Some of the opportunities highlighted include the Government Accountability Office program, IEEE-USA Congressional Fellowships, Institute for Peace Fellowship, National Library of Medicine Fellowship, National Science Foundation Rotations, and White House Fellows Program. Many offer hands-on experience in policy, research, and management in areas like health, science, technology, and international affairs.
The key to unlocking innovation in healthcare is focusing on disease prevention research and using electronic applications to isolate the most relevant patient data in order to tailor treatment. The panel recommended increasing investment in disease prevention, early detection and screening. They also recommended developing electronic medical records and efficient data management systems to make personalized medicine possible by leveraging a patient's genetic information and electronic health data. Challenges include the high costs of healthcare, social implications of lifestyle changes, and resistance from physicians to adopt new electronic systems.

The document summarizes the main trends in higher education that have resulted from the global financial crisis in developed, developing, and emerging countries. In developed countries, students are demanding different course and institutional choices, while governments are concerned with funding and access. Emerging nations saw massive student enrollment growth but also a loss of private sector and "third stream" income. Developing countries experienced worsening poverty, falling incomes, cuts to NGO funding, and inflation affecting infrastructure costs and staff pay. The document then presents options for universities to respond and concludes with implications for university management teams.

The School of Public Health conducts important research in key areas such as cancer, obesity, tobacco, alcohol, the environment, and health disparities. Significant collaborative projects occur both within the LSU system and with other Louisiana universities, as well as nationally. Major funding comes from grants and contracts, which provide around half of faculty salaries. Expanding research requires retaining top faculty, targeted recruitment, and infrastructure like updated laboratories. The research program is essential to the School of Public Health's mission of advancing public health through education, research and service.
This document provides guidance on funding options for clinical research. It discusses considering one's goals and interests to determine the appropriate funding. National Institutes of Health grants such as K-awards and R01 grants are recommended for spending significant time in academic investigation. Small internal grants can provide pilot data for larger grants. Industry-sponsored clinical trials are another option but require ensuring publication rights and managing conflicts of interest. The document stresses applying to multiple sources and being creative in finding support that aligns with one's research goals.
Diversity training grants supported by the NIH are multi-million dollar grants that seek to increase the
numbers of underrepresented minorities in the biomedical sciences. Specifically, these training grants aim
to augment the presence of certain groups— namely minorities (such as African-Americans, American
Indians, Alaska Natives, Hispanic/Latino Americans and U.S. Pacific Islanders) as well as individuals with
disabilities in the biomedical work force.
Leading a team of qualified individuals from various backgrounds and perspectives has proven to be an
effective strategy towards the resolution of complex scientific dilemmas. These grants represent a great
opportunity to make a difference and the NIH recognizes this. In 2011 alone over 39 million dollars were
awarded across 160 approved R25 grant applications. And this is just one of the many diversity-driven
grants currently available.
During this diversity-spirited Webinar, your expert presenter will cover the full range of what these training
grants entail. Special attention will be given to the R25 and T34 grants, but others will be discussed as well.
Walk away with a clear understanding of their mechanism and focus, the basic structure of these grants as
well as their collaborative nature.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

7. • Most of the large national foundations have multiple program areas consisting of numerous
sub-programs. For example, the Gates Foundation:
• Global Development: Agricultural Development; Financial Services for the Poor; Water,
Sanitation, and Hygiene, etc.
• Global Health: HIV, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Neglected Infectious Diseases, Pneumonia
• U.S. Program: College-Ready Education, Postsecondary Success, Washington State
• Proposals should align with the strategic programmatic goals and objectives of the foundation
as well as the specific goals and objectives of the individual programs
• Program officers are typically experts in their fields
• Foundations tend to know who the top academics/researchers are in their respective fields
and often use them as consultants on new program development or strategy refreshes
• Grantees are more often than not sourced by the foundation rather than the result of an
individual “cold” submission
• Proposals are often co-created by the prospective grantee and the foundation
• Typically support projects that are national or international in scope, impact large numbers of
people, can serve as a model for others, and have the capacity to become self-sustaining after
a period of years
National Foundation Opportunities: Program/Project Grants
8. • Many are institutionally limited and will require an internal review by the VPRGS Office to
determine which proposal goes forward (if multiple faculty members want to apply)
• Many require nomination by the university
• Strong emphasis on early career faculty
• Most have very specific eligibility requirements
• Focus tends to be on the sciences, engineering, and medical disciplines
• Most are multiyear awards (2-5 years)
• Application process may have multiple phases
• Highly competitive
• Expert review panels
• At MSU these types of opportunities are coordinated out of the VPRGS Office (Doug Gage) and
are listed on the Institutionally Limited Proposals website, which will also include an internal
deadline well before the actual submission deadline allowing time for internal review and
approval:
