Foster United started as a volunteer effort between four neighbors in the Foster Powell neighborhood of Southeast Portland. Their goal was to provide a resource for the community that would help unite neighbors and promote growth and sustainability. Over the years, Foster United produced blog posts, community events, and active discussions on Facebook to tell the stories of the area and give locals a voice to enact positive change. The volunteer-run group aspired to be an outlet for all members of the community and a way to strengthen the neighborhood.

RDP's digital platform provided over 1.6 million advertising impressions and ensured residents saw information about the initiative an average of 18.8 times. On October 11th, the initiative passed with 52% of registered voters turning out and 55% voting in favor. This was RDP's second victory on a ballot initiative in 2011, following an earlier win in Pearl, Mississippi allowing alcohol sales.

The occasion of the re-issue is our announcement of the first annual Paul and Joyce Aicher Leadership in Democracy Award. Paul and Joyce Aicher were the founders of what is now called Everyday Democracy. After Joyce passed away last fall, we wanted to find a way to honor the generosity, caring, and commitment to voice and justice that characterized Paul and Joyce’s lives. This award will acknowledge the work of an individual and/or organization that demonstrates the values on which Everyday Democracy was founded – voice, connection, racial equity, and communities that work for all.
Paul passed away just after this booklet was published in 2002, but the commitment and passion described in these pages continue to guide our work and have touched tens of thousands of people in hundreds of communities.

Opportunity Nation brings together leaders from nonprofits, businesses, higher education, and government to address economic mobility issues. They hold bipartisan convenings from large national summits to local meetings. These events elevate solutions, catalyze actions, and include young adults as participants and speakers. Over 200 young people have received scholarships to attend. Opportunity Nation has also formed a network of over 300 partners reaching over 100 million people to connect youth to education and careers. The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo supported resident engagement efforts in Tonawanda, NY to address air pollution concerns. Residents formed the Clean Air Coalition after health issues in the community were linked to emissions from a nearby coke plant. The foundation provided initial funding and training to help residents organize their advocacy efforts. While some board members had concerns about challenging a private business, the foundation ultimately decided to support the residents' campaign after learning more about the environmental justice issues involved. The foundation's involvement helped legitimize the residents' efforts and attract additional funding support.

John Mulvey, Nick Falbo, Tamra Tiemeyer, and Noelle Labrousse (myself) gathered on a mission to provide a resource for Southeast Portland that would serve to unite our neighbors on the path to growth and sustainability. This volunteer effort would go onto produce years of content, community events, and an active commentary which continues on our Facebook page today.
