Fortitude is defined as firmness of spirit, especially in difficulty, and provides constancy in pursuing virtue. It involves a willingness to go beyond one's duty. The virtue of fortitude is developed through education, practice, and perseverance during struggles, and makes people willing to persist over time when facing setbacks, failures, and misunderstandings. Fortitude is needed to push oneself to undertake difficult or distasteful tasks, especially inconvenient ones, and to resist fear, recklessness, indifference, and selfish interests.
