- FortiGate Virtual Appliances combine traditional FortiGate appliances with virtual domains and VLANs to enforce security between virtual zones.
- FortiGate Virtual Appliances are available in versions that support 2, 4, or 8 virtual CPUs and come pre-licensed to use the appropriate number of vCPUs. They require a minimum of 512MB RAM, 2 virtual NICs, and 30GB storage.
- Fortinet's virtual security strategy enables enterprises and service providers to deliver secure offerings across all cloud computing service and deployment models using both physical and virtual FortiGate form factors.

According to Infonetics, the content security gateway appliance market is expected to grow from $1.5 billion in 2010 to $2.1 billion in 2014. During that same period, Infonetics projects that the Web/malware segment of the market will grow 37 percent, from $850 million to nearly $1.2 billion.
Fortinet has been securing virtual architectures since the introduction of Virtual Domain (VDOM) technology in 2004. Fortinet strengthened its virtualization capabilities in 2006 after it acquired the intellectual property and technology of CoSine Communications, one of the first leaders in the virtual appliance industry. The technology enables service providers to differentiate their on-demand platforms with a full range of value-add virtualized network security services. Large enterprises rely as well on Fortinet technology to protect the data within their private and hybrid clouds. How we do it: Virtual LANs (VLANs) Virtual Domains (VDOMs) Administration Domains (ADOMs) Mail Domains (for FortiMail)
Why virtual appliances? Primarily, they are easier to provision. But they also allow administrators to place the security device “closer” to the hosts in the case of a virtualized environment. This can reduce bandwidth within the datacenter by eliminating the need to backhaul traffic out of and then back into the virtualized environment. By giving customers a choice of physical and virtual appliances, Fortinet is providing a 'single pane of glass' management platform that allows them the flexibility to use a combination of physical and virtual appliances together in order to achieve the right mix of performance, visibility, and control. Physical devices placed at the infrastructure perimeter for high-performance firewalling and VPN termination. Virtual devices placed within the virtual infrastructure for securing inter-VM traffic. Also great for virtual management appliances.
