The class observed ants in their nest for the second trimester. Each week they wrote observations of changes in their diary. They placed an insect and beetle in the anthill to see what would happen. The ants immediately attacked the beetle as it searched for an exit while the ants tried to defend their nest but had difficulty overcoming the beetle's hard body. This led them to question why beetles have hard exoskeletons. They acted out the fable of the grasshopper and the ant which taught values of mockery, helping others, and the ants' intelligence in storing food.
