Engage students in
discussions - Use
Learning Buddies/Talking
Partners/Elbow partners!
Every week the students
have a new Talking
Buddy. They discuss
their learning and ideas
with their buddy
throughout the day in all
curriculum areas.
There are co-
constructed guidelines.
Woohoo…
One session a week
where I get to inquire
about something I
want to know!
Use Models first!
Ask questions of the content.
Students can then create the
Success Criteria.
Students highlight where they
are at throughout the process.
A co-constructed target
rubric for impromptu
speeches.
Targets were VERY
familiar to students…
Students viewed
examples of excellent
speeches (Martin Luther
King, Steve Jobs etc) and
questioned what made
great speech. They then
co-constructed their
success criteria on a
target rubric. They self
assessed and peer
assessed by highlighting
the rubric following their
speech to the class.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 We don’t do things in cycles…each time we come back to an idea – we have improved on it. This was refreshing as I realised that while we do tend to come back to the way we used to do things, we are constantly improving on them to make them better!
  • #9 Activboard – Rachel ClappLots of ideas for the board…but some to use elsewhere as well.
  • #29 We need to get back to some basics and ask the questions – why do we inquire?, what do we inquire about?, How should we inquire? Things we can look at in our inquiry team and in a future staff meeting perhaps? My thoughts – are we teaching the unit and then getting our students to do a research project afterwards, or are we actually teaching our children to inquire deeply about things that they wonder?
