The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States and its principal federal law enforcement agency. It operates under the Department of Justice and reports to both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence. The FBI was formed in 1908 as the Bureau of Investigation and renamed the FBI in 1935. Its mission is to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States, with priorities including counterterrorism, counterintelligence, cybercrime, public corruption, civil rights, and violent crime. The FBI is organized into branches focusing on intelligence, national security, criminal investigations, science and technology, and information technology.
