the Russian ruble to drop. In addition to the strength of the
dollar, the ruble's price fell due to a greater demand for
foreign exchange. To replenish reserves of cash, the
country's central bank bought approximately $200 million
worth of foreign currencies.

3. Russian Currency
 With the value of the ruble on the decline,
economists looked for other ways to strengthen
Russia's position in the market. On May 20, oil,
Russia's primary export, had climbed by 1.4
percent after suffering a drop the day before.
Despite the rise in oil prices, the ruble continued
to fall.
Some good news for the ruble came near the end
of May, as analysts reported that exporters
needing to make tax payments were selling forex,
which was expected to stabilize the Russian
currency against the dollar.
