People can react to crises and disasters in a variety of ways. Keep in mind, however, that mental health professionals do not label reactions as “symptoms,” or speak in terms of a “ diagnoses” or “pathology” when responding to survivors of a crisis. One interesting way to better understand the scope of survivor reactions is to think of them in the context of Bronfenbrenner’s Chronosystem Model, a lifespan perspective. Where crises are concerned, the lifespan begins when the crisis starts. Although, where interventions are concerned, the counselor leader must look into the person’s past for precursors that might impact current reactions. Precursors may influence a counselor’s and other responders’ susceptibility to vicarious trauma reactions as well.
Cognitive, psychological, and physical reactions are common after a crisis. These may include crisis re-experiencing, hyperarousal, and avoidance reactions, which may meet the requirements for symptoms described in the
DSM-IV-TR
for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There are times when crisis responders allow survivors’ reactions to become their own, and secondary vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue may result. Helping professionals may be at risk for this to occur because of the nature of helping professionals’ commitment and involvement with clients.
When crises or disasters happen back to back, such as the 2010 massive earthquake in Haiti which was preceded by several destructive hurricanes, reactions of survivors and professionals who attend to them can be magnified.

1) The study examined how stigma stress affects people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia. It looked at how people appraise stigma as a stressor, their emotional and cognitive responses, and how those responses impact outcomes.

Employment is a concern that affects society, communities, families, and individuals. The world of work has changed considerably with each generation: advances in technology, changes in jobs and industries, high unemployment, universal health care, and lower wages, to name a few (Shoffner, 2006). To meet the needs of our clients today, counselors should be knowledgeable in career theories that can be applied to their career choice and development. This paper focuses on two theories: Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), and Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA). This author identifies the strengths and weaknesses to both perspectives, and explains how these theories may be applied to trauma and crisis populations.
Work Setting and Client Population
For the last ten years I worked in the field of education as an elementary school teacher. I recently made a career change that I felt compelled to follow: to counsel victims of violence and trauma survivors. I am currently not working in the field of mental health; however, I wish to pursue any work setting such as a hospital, shelter, or agency that serves victimized populations. I also aspire to get involved with Red Cross or FEMA relief agencies when services are needed for disaster relief. I want to give back to the community, and make it count.
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Theory of Work Adjustment
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) is a learning and cognitive approach to career development and choice (Shoffner, 2006). The key concepts of self-efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations, and career choice barriers and supports, contribute to career interests, goals, and behavior (Morris, Shoffner, & Newsome, 2009). Chronister & McWhirter (2003) assert that SCCT integrates the role of environmental influences on the “development and pursuit of vocational and educational interests, choices, and performance” (p. 419). In short, people’s interests and aspirations are influenced by their belief that they can do things well.
The Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA), by Dawis, England, and Lofquist, was developed from the trait and factor approach to career counseling. TWA posits that success on the job results from a good “fit” between individuals and their work environments (Shoffner, 2006). The four main components of TWA are satisfaction, person--environment correspondence, reinforcement value, and ability, addressing both individual characteristics and pertinent environmental factors (Shoffner, 2006).
Similarities and Differences
Social Cognitive Career Theory and Theory of Work Adjustment both have a solid and extensive research base with continuous empirical findings to support their theoretical approaches to career development. Both theories may be applied to a variety of populations such as “girl.

Work Environment Assessment Results
The results of the Work Environment Assessment show that the workplace I evaluated could use some improvement. This determination is based on a Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory score of 72, which is mildly healthy. I rated 12 questions in the “somewhat true” category and 8 in the “neutral” category. The workplace sits somewhere right in the middle based on the fact that I have had or witnessed, some negative interactions, but overall people are happy and satisfied with their jobs. I don’t believe patient care is impacted negatively, however with more advocacy for civility based on the assessment there is room for improvement. Clark (2019) stated, “disrespectful and uncivil behaviors in healthcare settings can have detrimental effects on individuals, teams, organizations, and patient safety—including life-threatening mistakes, preventable complications, or harm to a patient” (para. 1). We know from studies and assessments, like the Clark Inventory, that the changes made to improve civility in the workplace also improving patient outcomes. I believe my workplace is mostly civil. There are always a few things in any environment or situation that can have a negative impact. Sometimes it’s a person, other times it’s a schedule, policy, or procedure. My workplace makes a good effort to correct any incivility that arises, but more can always be done. Based on the inventory they could improve in areas like promoting employee wellness and self-care, offering mentoring programs, and implementing joint-decision making.
Incivility in the workplace
The American Nurses Association defined incivility as “one or more rude, discourteous, or disrespectful actions that may or may not have a negative intent behind them” (Violence, Incivility, & Bullying, 2017, para. 2). Based on that description I recall a time when an ER physician screamed at me and insulted me in front of my peers and within earshot of patient and their families. It was not something I had done wrong and she later apologized stating she was “just having a bad day.” The charge nurse also pulled her aside and told her if she was going to treat her nurses like that there would be a formal complaint filed against her. It made for a very uncomfortable shift. As much as I tried to forget the incident, the damage was done to our working relationship. I never let it affect patient care, but all respect that I once had for her was gone. I am a firm believer in “praise in public, punish in private.” Had she just pulled me aside and asked about the situation she would have realized her error, instead she lost her cool and chose to berate me in front of peers and patients. Not only did she build a barrier with me, but she also lost the respect of many of my peers, and probably a few patients. All it took was one incidence of her losing her composure to change how everyone working that shif.

Finally, observations allow us “to collect data on actual behavior rather than reports of people’s behavior” (Anderson, 2016, p. 151). We do not use this a primary source of data gathering; rather, informal and formal observations give us the opportunity to confirm reports first-hand. Unofficially and informally, I will often observe goings-on to try identifying potential concerns so we can implement interventions before preemptively.

Keep in mind, however, that mental health professionals do not label reactions as “symptoms,” or speak in terms of a “ diagnoses” or “pathology” when responding to survivors of a crisis. One interesting way to better understand the scope of survivor reactions is to think of them in the context of Bronfenbrenner’s Chronosystem Model, a lifespan perspective. Where crises are concerned, the lifespan begins when the crisis starts. Although, where interventions are concerned, the counselor leader must look into the person’s past for precursors that might impact current reactions. Precursors may influence a counselor’s and other responders’ susceptibility to vicarious trauma reactions as well.
Cognitive, psychological, and physical reactions are common after a crisis. These may include crisis re-experiencing, hyperarousal, and avoidance reactions, which may meet the requirements for symptoms described in the
DSM-IV-TR
for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There are times when crisis responders allow survivors’ reactions to become their own, and secondary vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue may result. Helping professionals may be at risk for this to occur because of the nature of helping professionals’ commitment and involvement with clients.
When crises or disasters happen back to back, such as the 2010 massive earthquake in Haiti which was preceded by several destructive hurricanes, reactions of survivors and professionals who attend to them can be magnified.

1) The study examined how stigma stress affects people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia. It looked at how people appraise stigma as a stressor, their emotional and cognitive responses, and how those responses impact outcomes.

Applying Theory to Specific Settings and Populations
Employment is a concern that affects society, communities, families, and individuals. The world of work has changed considerably with each generation: advances in technology, changes in jobs and industries, high unemployment, universal health care, and lower wages, to name a few (Shoffner, 2006). To meet the needs of our clients today, counselors should be knowledgeable in career theories that can be applied to their career choice and development. This paper focuses on two theories: Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), and Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA). This author identifies the strengths and weaknesses to both perspectives, and explains how these theories may be applied to trauma and crisis populations.
Work Setting and Client Population
For the last ten years I worked in the field of education as an elementary school teacher. I recently made a career change that I felt compelled to follow: to counsel victims of violence and trauma survivors. I am currently not working in the field of mental health; however, I wish to pursue any work setting such as a hospital, shelter, or agency that serves victimized populations. I also aspire to get involved with Red Cross or FEMA relief agencies when services are needed for disaster relief. I want to give back to the community, and make it count.
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Theory of Work Adjustment
Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) is a learning and cognitive approach to career development and choice (Shoffner, 2006). The key concepts of self-efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations, and career choice barriers and supports, contribute to career interests, goals, and behavior (Morris, Shoffner, & Newsome, 2009). Chronister & McWhirter (2003) assert that SCCT integrates the role of environmental influences on the “development and pursuit of vocational and educational interests, choices, and performance” (p. 419). In short, people’s interests and aspirations are influenced by their belief that they can do things well.
The Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA), by Dawis, England, and Lofquist, was developed from the trait and factor approach to career counseling. TWA posits that success on the job results from a good “fit” between individuals and their work environments (Shoffner, 2006). The four main components of TWA are satisfaction, person--environment correspondence, reinforcement value, and ability, addressing both individual characteristics and pertinent environmental factors (Shoffner, 2006).
Similarities and Differences
Social Cognitive Career Theory and Theory of Work Adjustment both have a solid and extensive research base with continuous empirical findings to support their theoretical approaches to career development. Both theories may be applied to a variety of populations such as “girl.

Work Environment Assessment Results
The results of the Work Environment Assessment show that the workplace I evaluated could use some improvement. This determination is based on a Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory score of 72, which is mildly healthy. I rated 12 questions in the “somewhat true” category and 8 in the “neutral” category. The workplace sits somewhere right in the middle based on the fact that I have had or witnessed, some negative interactions, but overall people are happy and satisfied with their jobs. I don’t believe patient care is impacted negatively, however with more advocacy for civility based on the assessment there is room for improvement. Clark (2019) stated, “disrespectful and uncivil behaviors in healthcare settings can have detrimental effects on individuals, teams, organizations, and patient safety—including life-threatening mistakes, preventable complications, or harm to a patient” (para. 1). We know from studies and assessments, like the Clark Inventory, that the changes made to improve civility in the workplace also improving patient outcomes. I believe my workplace is mostly civil. There are always a few things in any environment or situation that can have a negative impact. Sometimes it’s a person, other times it’s a schedule, policy, or procedure. My workplace makes a good effort to correct any incivility that arises, but more can always be done. Based on the inventory they could improve in areas like promoting employee wellness and self-care, offering mentoring programs, and implementing joint-decision making.
Incivility in the workplace
The American Nurses Association defined incivility as “one or more rude, discourteous, or disrespectful actions that may or may not have a negative intent behind them” (Violence, Incivility, & Bullying, 2017, para. 2). Based on that description I recall a time when an ER physician screamed at me and insulted me in front of my peers and within earshot of patient and their families. It was not something I had done wrong and she later apologized stating she was “just having a bad day.” The charge nurse also pulled her aside and told her if she was going to treat her nurses like that there would be a formal complaint filed against her. It made for a very uncomfortable shift. As much as I tried to forget the incident, the damage was done to our working relationship. I never let it affect patient care, but all respect that I once had for her was gone. I am a firm believer in “praise in public, punish in private.” Had she just pulled me aside and asked about the situation she would have realized her error, instead she lost her cool and chose to berate me in front of peers and patients. Not only did she build a barrier with me, but she also lost the respect of many of my peers, and probably a few patients. All it took was one incidence of her losing her composure to change how everyone working that shif.

Since there is a significant number of employees for whom English is a second language, the survey is offered in English and Spanish so as many people as possible can provide answers in their native tongue. Unfortunately, because many of employees are of low socio-economic status, distributing the survey electronically has mixed results – many employees do not have easy access to technology while others simply do not know who to use it. To help with this problem, employees are encouraged to complete surveys onsite using company tablets.
Finally, observations allow us “to collect data on actual behavior rather than reports of people’s behavior” (Anderson, 2016, p. 151). We do not use this a primary source of data gathering; rather, informal and formal observations give us the opportunity to confirm reports first-hand. Unofficially and informally, I will often observe goings-on to try identifying potential concerns so we can implement interventions before preemptively.
