Two greater Manchester police officers have been injured in a hit
and run incident in Harpurhey. Both are in a stable condition in
hospital after both received multiple injuries. [14 seconds]
Two men have been arrested in Haslingden on suspicion of attempted
murder.
We sent our crime correspondent Holly Jackson to speak to PC Neil
England about safety in the police force. [10 seconds]
Crime Correspondent: I spoke to PC Neil England about the dangers of
policing the streets.
PC Neil England: When you’re going out into traffic from a police vehicle. It’s advisable when you get
out of the driver’s seat that you have some kind of fluorescent jacket on so if you do alight into traffic
that then the traffic can see you. However that isn’t always the case. Like anyone else police officers
have to observe the Highway Code and make sure that when they do alight the vehicle and that’s
normal for any police officer.
Our Crime Correspondent Holly Jackson: Do you feel like police road
safety has been affected by the recent events of the two officers
being injured in the line of duty?
PC Neil England: Police portals are advised on parade about the type of incident and what occurred.
It’s a reminder to all police officers how dangerous the job is.

2. Crime Correspondent: Do you safe driving around in a marked vehicle?
PC Neil England: I think there’s no difference to when I first joined the police. That you are as safe as
you ever was the good thing about a marked vehicle is that people moderate their behaviour when
they’re driving around you they tend to behave themselves a lot more because they know that you
have powers to stop them and to question them about their driving and whether or not they are safe
on the road themselves so no when you’re in a police vehicle you are safe if not safer than the
members of the public.

Crime correspondent: Do you feel this makes you a target?
PC Neil England: You can be a target for the wrong type of people. If they have their own agenda or
hidden agenda relation to you as a police office. Unfortunately the role attracts the kind of clientele
that on occasion don’t like authority figures.
Presenter: In other news, Oldham’s Jeremy Broadbent has been
nominated for the pride of Oldham award after his work during the
Olympics.
He was part of the One Future Olympic Legacy project which aimed for
Oldham’s residents to provide a legacy in order to build a better
future for our citizens. [19 seconds]
Our reporter Sarah Malkin talked to Jeremy Broadbent about his
feelings on being nominated for this award.
Reporter: I asked Jeremy about his involvement in Oldham’s Olympic
legacy and about his nomination.
Jeremy Broadbent: Well of course it was quite an honour but that wasn’t the reason why we took on
the project and the other point about it is I was representing a team but again it was an honour to be
able to do that. It wasn’t something that we planned to do and it was nice to get a little bit of
recognition for something we do as a company anyway.
Reporter: How does it feel to come from a small town like Oldham and
have an impact on something so big like the London Olympics?
Jeremy Broadbent: We played a part but it’s part of the legacy issues on how we then continue to
get people from Oldham to contribute to the Glasgow Commonwealth games. So it doesn’t stop after
the Olympics its how we carry it forward.
I was also interested in finding out your thoughts about Oldham’s
Olympic legacy....

Presenter: In sport, Oldham lost in their match at Goodison Park
against Everton 3-1 bringing an end to their great FA winning spree.
Their fans, however, are still high in spirits’ and this was shown
with their loud chanting at subsequent games.
We asked Latics fans their opinion on the great achievement of their
local team. (21 seconds)
Over to our reporter Sarah Malkin.
Reporter: I’m here outside Boundary Park to speak to their diehard
fans.
- Excuse me sir, what do you make of Oldham’s winning spree?
Vox pop 1- Everyone’s come together as a community I think, even non Oldham fans still supported
us to go all the way, unfortunately it ended in heartbreak.
Vox pop 2- I think it’s benefited the town but I think it’ll be forgotten about in a few months.
Vox pop 3- People would have come to watch the matches, I’m just happy they got as far as they did.
Vox pop 3 – I think it probably has, yes I think people have got behind the club and even people who
aren’t supporters feel proud to be part of Oldham and part of what the team’s achieved. I do think it
has benefited the town. I think most people, in Oldham feel proud, whether they are football fans or
not.
