period 7- Soranda Phal- "Water Pollution"mrsalcido
The document discusses water pollution and its causes and effects. It notes that water pollution occurs when pollutants contaminate bodies of water, negatively impacting water quality. Common causes of water pollution include littering, waste from factories, and oil spills. The document emphasizes that water is essential for life but only a small percentage is available for human use, so water pollution is a serious problem if left unaddressed and could result in water shortages and conflicts. It concludes by urging actions like reducing littering and advocating for companies to curb waste dumping to help prevent further water pollution.
The document discusses a team's First Lego League project to improve the water cycle in Weiser, Idaho. The team toured the city's drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities. They observed the steps to clean drinking water and the role of microorganisms in wastewater treatment. The team identified two issues with the current system: residents putting grease down drains and flushing wipes, which can damage infrastructure. Their proposed solutions are to educate residents on these issues and promote using tap water over bottled water. The team invites people to their competition on December 2nd at McCain Middle School.
The document discusses various ways that water is essential for life around the world. It provides examples of religious and cultural traditions surrounding bodies of water, as well as challenges to water access faced by communities in places experiencing drought, pollution, or other water issues. The photos depict people and landscapes impacted by issues with water scarcity, flooding, pollution, and climate change in locations across the globe.

Sounding off on hearing aids expert advice from the federal trade commissionRobin Hardin
The Federal Trade Commission recommends that the over 35 million Americans with impaired hearing seek advice from a qualified hearing specialist like an otolaryngologist, audiologist, or hearing aid dispenser when choosing a hearing device. An otolaryngologist specializes in ear diseases but does not typically fit hearing aids. Hearing aid dispenser qualifications vary by state and may not include advanced hearing training. An audiologist has a master's degree and can perform hearing tests, fit hearing aids, and advise on hearing accessories. The FTC advises trusting a qualified hearing specialist over a self-proclaimed expert for hearing loss advice.

Thirsty Central Florida has plans for St. Johns _ JacksonvilleDavid Hunt
Utility managers in Central Florida are considering drawing up to 262 million gallons of water per day from the St. Johns River and its tributary, the Ocklawaha River, to support growing water demands. This large daily drawdown of water from the rivers could lower their flows by 4.9% and negatively impact the environment by increasing saltwater intrusion and changing habitats. Opponents argue the plans could damage the river ecosystem and are pushing for more conservation efforts and an independent environmental assessment before approving any water extraction.
HOW HUMANS AFFECT THE ENVIRONMENT-Markeyla RobinsonMarkeyla Robinson
Humans impact the water cycle through greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming and melting ice, and through deforestation which reduces evapotranspiration. The Flint, Michigan water crisis demonstrates how human actions directly affected the water cycle - switching the city's water source to the Flint River contaminated the water with lead, poisoning thousands of children and requiring over $1 billion to address the extensive damage to infrastructure and public health. While intending to save money, the state of Michigan's actions inadvertently harmed the local population and environment through contaminated water.
Water shortage is a growing problem around the world caused by factors like pollution, population growth, and climate change. It negatively impacts both humans and wildlife by limiting access to safe drinking water. While solutions like building dams and desalination have been attempted, reducing water demand through conservation efforts may be more effective and sustainable. Education programs to change water consumption behaviors and improve agricultural practices can help decrease strain on water supplies. Without action, water scarcity issues will only worsen over time.

The document discusses the social and economic impacts of floods on communities. Some key social impacts include injuries, the spread of diseases, loss of lives, and homelessness as floodwaters can damage buildings. Economic impacts consist of damage to machinery, equipment, and transport infrastructure which can halt economic activity and disrupt energy supply. The case study of floods in Thailand in 2011 caused major social issues like lack of communications due to no power for signals or charging devices, and economic losses across industries, utilities, vehicles, and households.
The document discusses floods, their causes, effects, and management. It notes that floods are among the most common and destructive natural hazards. The main causes of flooding include prolonged rainfall, snowmelt, volcanic eruptions, storms, dam failures, and development in floodplains. Floods can damage infrastructure and agriculture, spread disease, and cause loss of life. Management strategies aim to modify floods, susceptibility, or loss burden through structural measures like dams or non-structural measures like warning systems and zoning. India's major flood-prone states are Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam. The devastating 2008 Kosi flood in Bihar displaced millions and caused widespread damage costing over $500 million.
This document discusses four cases of pond draining in Waterloo Region. It describes ponds that were drained at the proposed Ira Needles Mega Mall site, on West Side Lands property, on a property owned by Mr. Zister, and on a property owned by Mr. Howald. In each case, the document notes what species inhabited the ponds and issues with the pond draining, such as a lack of environmental assessments and impacts to natural habitats.
A Nationwide Problem: Americans Waste 1 Trillion Gallons of Water a YearFrank_Carter
Water, according to The Economist, is the world’s most valuable element. Diamonds, oil, and other expensive commodities on Earth are worth nothing in the absence of water. This resource is essential for sustaining life, and even though mostly unpriced, has no substitute.

The document discusses flooding in the UK and provides several key points:
1) One in six houses in the UK is at risk of flooding according to the Environment Agency. For every £1 spent on prevention, £6 could be saved on repair costs.
2) The South East of England is the most threatened region. Flooding can have long-term impacts on communities by damaging homes and businesses.
3) The 2007 floods in Hull showed that urban drainage systems may not be adequately designed to handle large storms, especially with climate change increasing flood risks.
Staying dry with rising tides – case study miami beach inc2Kerry Olsson
The City of Miami Beach, Florida, USA is a beautiful resort community nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. Miami Beach is built on natural and man-made barrier islands.
Infrastructure which ensures residents and tourists in Miami Beach aren’t regularly flooded by sea water is often taken for granted however with a changing climate it has become evident to residents that there are issues that need to be dealt with.
Much of the system that transports stormwater directly to the sea was built just a few centimeters to one to two meters above sea level. Over the years these outlet structures have settled, and sea levels have risen, often causing seawater to flow into the stormwater system.
Overfilled stormwater systems cause seawater to push up onto streets as well as residential and commercial properties causing blocked roads, inconvenienced pedestrians, closed businesses, and damaged homes.
A team of scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Potsdam, Germany has detected a clear upward trend in the past few decades toward more unprecedented daily rainfall events. The institute found that these once anomalous events have increased in frequency 24 percent in central and eastern US.
Miami Beach is spending more than US$500 million in infrastructure to brace for the scientific projection that the sea level will rise 1.5m by the turn of the century. This paper will present issues surrounding aging infrastructure, and solutions put in place during phase 1 & 2 of this monumental project exhibiting the success of the project and potential issues surrounding trying to flood-proof a city.
Funding and Implementing an Emergency Hurricane Water FacilityRotary International
After hurricanes Frances and Jeanne struck within weeks of
each other in 2004, Rotary clubs in the Bahamas partnered
with local charities, government, and Rotary clubs in the
USA to build a reverse osmosis water treatment plant.
The facility operates in emergencies only, producing and
distributing free, safe drinking water when hurricanes
interrupt the normal supply. Learn how the partnership and
grant funding developed, what lessons were learned, and
how the plant continues to serve residents of the Bahamas in

The document discusses issues with sewage treatment in Youngstown, Ohio that have led to environmental problems. It provides background on the history of sewage systems being built through local parks in 1919. Recent heavy rains in 2015 caused over 100,000 gallons of raw sewage to overflow into lakes, causing high E. coli levels and fish kills. Studies from 1999-2002 found the water quality in local rivers and lakes violated EPA standards due to overflows from sewage treatment plants. The city was under a federal consent decree from 2002 to address the problems, but was unable to afford the estimated $310 million in upgrades required. A new policy, the Clean Water Affordability Act, aims to make the upgrades more affordable for the city
1) Public supply is the second largest consumer of water in California. Public water supply systems provide water to communities for domestic, commercial, industrial, and public uses like pools and parks.
2) Public water supply systems are run by either government entities or private companies. They supply everyday water usage to people in counties and communities.
3) Water for public supply comes from sources like rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and is used by both humans and other species for survival.

This proposal suggests a tax credit for Utah residents who convert their water-intensive lawns into water-wise landscapes. Utah faces increasing water demands from its growing population, but receives little annual precipitation. Most residents use over half their water outside on lawns. The tax credit would cover costs of installing water collection, graywater, or other conservation systems. This would incentivize individuals to reduce water use, helping ensure sufficient long-term water supply as the population doubles by 2050. Estimates show residents could save over 29,000 gallons and $350 annually through such conversions.
Floods are a common natural disaster caused by heavy rainfall or snowmelt that leads to overflowing rivers, streams, lakes or oceans overtaking dry land. They can cause widespread damage, injury and loss of life. Some key points about floods are:
- They occur globally in every country and region near bodies of water or with heavy precipitation. Common types include river floods, flash floods, coastal floods, and urban floods.
- Factors like intensity and duration of rainfall, soil conditions, terrain, development in floodplains, and blocked drainage systems influence flood risks and impacts.
- Floods destroy property and infrastructure, damage crops and land, and disrupt lives. They are among the most costly

A broken water main left at least 4 homes uninhabitable Saturday. Residents in Foothill Utah have
begun the water cleanup process.
(Newswire.net -- October 13, 2014) --Â
A broken water main left at least 4 homes uninhabitable Saturday. Residents in Foothill Utah have
begun the water cleanup process. While some residents are starting the process themselves, Tom
Ward, deputy director for the city's Department of Public Utilities said, "Salt Lake City has a no-fault
ordinance that allows us to take care of the problem and restore things as best we can. Obviously it's
a mess here now, but we will take care of it."
Work continued on Sunday by emergency
crews to reopen the intersection.
Approximately 35 structures, including 1
school and over 2 dozen homes reported
some kind of damage related to the
broken 48-inch water main. The water
main under 1700 South and Foothill Drive
released an estimated 2.5 million gallons
of water into the surrounding area.
Daryl Olsen from Utah Disaster
Specialists said, "A lot of people are doing
the water cleanup on their own. Unless
you dry the structure, you are only doing
half the job. Without proper drying, water damage can lead to mold. Water damage cleanup should
be handled by a professional."
The school will be closed Monday while staff members try to salvage what they can from the water
logged school. Electricity was shut off at some of the affected areas to avoid additional problems.
The water was reportedly shut off within an hour of the 8:30 pm break on Friday. The pipe continued
to drain throughout the night.
The cause of the break remains under investigation.
Any residents who experienced property damage as a result of the water damage and have not been
contacted by city officials are encouraged to call Salt Lake City Public Utilities at 801-483-6700.
